La Esperanza

I Visited La Esperanza in Adeje, with Stuart who often volunteers his time in the rescue shelters .  Marisa Traen met us at the gate of her refuge and we walked past an area where most of the dogs are allowed to run around, they all seem to be happy and they certainly had plenty of room. We were then shown around the kennels and were glad to see only a few dogs in each kennel, except for the 5 puppies and their surrogate mum a male pooch !

Marisa started the refuge approx 8 years ago, It developed from opening up a boarding kennel 'Petsworld Dog Hotel' and finding unfortunately some people started to leave abandoned dogs on her doorstep. So then La Esperanza was born. Marisa  has established connections with many other rescue centres in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and France, with whom she has established close and ongoing contact.

 Hola its me !

La Esperanza  has some great volunteers , but of course Marisa would be grateful for more help, for example with cleaning and donations of dog food, plus anyone who has building experience and is willing to donate their time that would be great.

Marisa told me that all the dogs that come in her refuge are castrated, which is especially important for the ones who live in the open large plot. She firmly believes in sterilisation and her own dogs also have been castrated. The maximum number of dogs she will have at one time is 60 dogs

The  boarding kennels  help towards the cost of running the refuge. But funding of the refuge is largely done by fund-raising through market stalls etc. and donations. A washing machine was donated recently by a kind member of Tenerife forum .
