The Taco Bell Chihuahua, a Doberman, and a Bulldog are in a doggie bar....

Doggie Joke.....
The Taco Bell Chihuahua, a Doberman, and a Bulldog are in a doggie bar having a cool one when a good-looking female Belgian Tervuren comes upto them and says, "Whoever can say liver and cheese in a sentence can have me." So the Doberman says, "I love liver and cheese." The Belgiansays, "That's not good enough." The Bulldog says, "I hate liver and cheese." She says, "That's not creative." Finally the Chihuahua says, "Liver alone...cheese mine!"

k9 News and Events

K9 Team in Alcala - Photo taken by John Beckley of  'Sorted Sites.Com'

Sponsored Walk In Alcala 6th December 2009

On Sunday 6th December a Sponsored Walk took place organised by Christine, Kenny & Maggie. The walk was from Alcala to Playa San Juan and back again finishing at Tu Rincon (known as the Beach Bar, run by Juan Carlos) and raised the sum of €732.43.  K9 would like to thank all those who took part especially the Sponsors & Walkers – namely Maggie with Rosie, Francisco, M.Williams, Wendy & Graham and W.Anderson. The evening entertainment was provided by Steve the Wanderer.
Many thanks for such a splendid effort in raising this amount which has gone towards food and vet’s bills at the kennels.

K9 & FRIENDS OF THE ANIMALS would like to take the opportunity of thanking our vets for their support during the past year. Victor and his staff at Alcala (922 865505 – 24 hours and 616 366982), Pedro, Cesear & Rafael at Hospivet Sur in Las Chafiras (922 736927) and Fernando & Veronica in Los Olivos, Adeje (922 780088 and 667 802873) who go out of their way to help us and we would recommend members of the public going to them for assistance.

PLAYA SAN JUAN & ALCALA Markets

During the past year Muriel of K9 started going to Alcala Market and was later joined by Kenny & Maggie. This has proved a profitable move on Muriel’s part and since her long stay in the U.K., Kenny & Maggie have taken over organising Playa San Juan and Alcala with the valuable help of Ingrid.
Playa San Juan takes place on Wednesdays and Alcala on Sundays (both 9am to 2pm).

K9 CAR BOOT SALE, Happy Days, Silencio, NEARLY NEW SALE, Shimmers Bar, Callao Salvaje and FRIENDS OF THE ANIMALS Car Boot Sale, Los Gigantes.

The K9 Car Boot Sale takes place on the First Sunday of every month,(8am -2pm) the Nearly New Sale on the Second Saturday each month (10am -12noon) and the Friends of the Animals Car Boot Sale on the last Sunday of every month. (8am – 2pm).

More clothes, shoes, bedding, books CD’s, DVD,s & BRIC A BRAC are desperately needed for these Sales, and goods can be left at the Kennels, brought to any of the Sales or collected (Pat the Cat on
608 121 081 or Kenny on 686 141 003)

Our appreciation and thanks go to all the helpers at the above Sales and those who sort at the Local – please keep up the good work in helping towards the care of the animals at the kennels.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLES

During the festive season we had several Baskets made by Muriel to raise money for K9. Taffy’s Bar in San Eugenio raised a staggering €460., Paddy McGinty’s in Callao Salvaje raised €275 (all tickets sold by Arianna); the Corner Bar at Parque De La Paz raised €140 and Happy Days & The Globe €80 – a fantastic total of €955 – a big “Thank You” from the dogs & cats at the kennels.
Any bars wishing to have Easter Baskets to raffle to raise funds for K9 please get in touch with Pat the Cat (608 121 081)

FORTHCOMING EVENTS

There is to be a K9 Musical Gala Evening on Tuesday 11th May at Starlights Bar, Silencio. There will be an all star line up of entertainment plus a Buffet. The purpose of the evening is to raise awareness as well as money to support the abandoned cats & dogs in the K9 kennels at San Miguel.
More information will be provided in later editions of this paper. Guests will also be invited to donate a tin or bag of cat/dog food and bring it with them on the 11th.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

The dogs like to be taken out of the kennels for a change of scene, so there is always room for more dog walkers and you will be made welcome any day from 10am to 1.30pm. We have sufficient volunteers on a Sunday but very little help on the other days.

Occasionally foster parents for a cat or dog are needed for short term care. The reason might be a broken bone, illness or just TLC. Please contact the kennels if interested.

Help is needed as required in trapping & neutering of stray cats. Training will be provided for anyone interested. Again please contact the kennels for further information.

If you would like to arrange a fundraising event on K9’s behalf, or have any ideas, please contact any of the telephone numbers below.

Can you spare an hour to give a few doggies a walk at K9

Nikki went up to k9 today to give a few doggies a walk on some land opposite the kennels. When Nikki arrived a volunteer took a pooch (Charlie) out of a kennel and gave him some food and when Charlie had finished his dinner then she took him for a walk, which is a small circuit of about 20 minutes.

Charlie posing for Nikki and her camera

Tucking into his dinner before being taken for a walk

The volunteers who work there are sympathetic, so if you feel you can't handle a big boisterous pooch do tell them. Nikki has a shoulder problem at the moment so took out only meduim and small pooches, but of course if you can handle larger dogs they definately also need their walkies.

Playing up for the camera..!

My turn next for a walk..?

Encouragement to all who help animals

Starfish Poem

Once upon a time there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean to do his
writing. He had a habit of walking on the
beach before he began his work.
One day he was walking along the shore.
As he looked down the beach, he saw a
human figure moving like a dancer.

So he began to walk faster to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw that it was a
young man and the young man wasn't
dancing, but instead he was reaching
down to the shore, picking up something
and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out, "Good
morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused, looked up and replied,"Throwing
starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing
starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't
throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles
and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't
possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely. Then
bent down, picked up another starfish and threw it
into the ocean, past the breaking waves and said -
"It made a difference for that one."

Gone to the Dogs - The Movie !

This sounds like a barking good movie to me 'Gone to the Dogs' is a surreal comedy about poor old Jack, a frustrated pensioner who dies and comes back to earth as a dog. A cast of 15 canine stars performs alongside British cinema legends, Tony Booth and Dora Bryan.

Think before you give your dog up to a Rescue Shelter

The rescue shelters in Tenerife as in many countries are suffering because of the global crisis , down turn on money donated and more people giving up their dogs because they just can't afford to keep them, due to unemployment change of circumstances etc. So inevitably now the shelters are becoming very crowded.

So to anybody who is considering giving their dog away to a rescue shelter have you thought through the implications of leaving your dog in a shelter. It might be an idea to visit a rescue shelter before you decide to give your pooch up, as a reality check. The rescue shelters here are very kind and hard working and look after the doggies as best they can with the restrictions they have with finances, volunteers and constrictions on space. But your beloved pooch will be in a cage a good portion of the day, waiting and hoping for a kind human to take him or her home. If your dog is large he could be waiting for years. I recently went up to a rescue shelter and they have big dogs which have been there for three years !

Of course sometimes there is no alternative and personal circumstances mean your dog will have to go to a rescue shelter . But please don't leave the decision to the last minute try and leave sometime for finding a home for your pooch yourself, he deserves that at least !

There are dog hotels on the island that will keep your dog long term then fly your pooch back to your home. Or maybe you have a relative or friend who could foster your dog for a while.

Please don't just rely on the dog rescue shelters to help you out, they are currently overflowing with doggies to look after.
