It was a very hot for the end of November even for Tenerife standards, but fortunately their was plenty of shade so the dogs and their owners could wait for there turn more comfortably out of the sun.Bowls of water were scattered around so the doggies could help themselves to a drink.

What you can do…

In our organisation time is a big factor and we are always in need of people who can give some of their time to us, as there are never enough people to get the tasks done. If you are able to help with any of the following tasks please contact the relevant people. THANK YOU.

We are in need of good quality bric a brac and other suitable car boot items. These can be delivered directly to the kennels during opening hours. Open every day from 10.30am till 1.30pm, or if you need the items to be collected then please call Pat on 608121081 or Kenny on 627096518 to arrange collection. (No large furniture items please). We also need volunteers to help at the car boot sales and other fundraising events that take place, please call Pat.

The dogs like to be taken out of the kennels for a change, so we are always happy when dog walkers turn up. You are always welcome at the kennels any day from 9.30am till 1.30pm. Please have sensible footwear and a drink. Respect the advice given about each individual dog.

If anyone is interested in assisting primarily with our cats, we do need help with trapping and neutering as required, or help on a morning from 9am at the kennel Cattery. Tel 667638468.

Occasionally we need foster parents for a dog or a cat. They may need special care or just TLC due to illness, broken bones, or some other reason. If you would be interested in fostering please contact the kennels on 667638468.

We are forever on the lookout for new fundraising ideas; if you would like to arrange a fundraising event on our behalf, or have any ideas, please contact any of the numbers below.

Due primarily to the ‘credit crunch’ K9 and other refuges are feeling the effects of more cats and dogs needing to be re-homed. Please think carefully before taking on a pet – dogs and cats need to have their injections up to date, six months prior to leaving Tenerife. It is also very expensive to take them back to the UK. If our kennels are full please contact the police (Tel 112) in the district you reside (as a last resort).

K9 also have a Computer expert, 2 skilled seamstresses, a TV engineer and 2 experienced Dog Walkers/Sitters, who offer special prices to other K9 supporters for any work undertaken.

Forthcoming Events.

Thurs 26th November. Race Night at The Globe Pub, Costa Del Silencio 7.30pm.

Donations of Dog food or Treats are gratefully accepted at all K9 functions.

Sunday 6th December. Sponsored Walk. 10am Alcala to San Juan to Alcala Plaza. Live music from 1pm. Sponsor forms and further info from Christine on 669613675

Puppy Trafficers !

This makes me barking mad Puppy trafficing. Check out this under cover RSPCA video..

Don't buy from a puppy farm or pet shop and make sure you see the puppy with its mother and check the doggies vaccinations papers. I know its tempting to buy a puppy if you feel sorry for him or her but its just encouraging puppy trafficing.

K9 Musical Gala Evening 16th November 2009

There was a full house and several more seated outside at Starlights Bar at Coral Mar Square in Costa Del Silencio, to appreciate the many talents appearing.

The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness and money to support the abandoned dogs and cats at the K9 kennels in San Miguel. Througout the evening, overhead monitors showed images of the dogs and cats whom are currently at the kennels and was a visual reminder of what the evening was all about.

Eight acts were kind enough to donate their time and talents to this worthy cause.

First up was Stan Fraser who gave his version of the Sinatra classics, followed by John Ashford with his brilliant Buddy Holly Appreciation Show. This had the audience either foot tapping or rocking on the dance floor.

Christine Kay belted out songs that suited her style to perfection. Over the years she has become a favourite to K9 audiences with her extraordinary talent.

The interval provided respite and the Buffet generously provided by Gareth went down a treat.

Ian Anderson kicked off the second half with his songs from the Shows, ranging from Chicago to Phantom of the Opera. Such is the strength of Ian’s voice, that much of his act was performed without a microphone. His rendition of Nessum Dorma to close his ‘spot’ is always worth listening to.

Jesse Goran provided a wide variety of old favourites ranging from Country & Western to Rock & Roll. This gave the line dancers the opportunity to show their skills on the dance floor and a solo performance from Pat the Cat ( 3 months after a hip replacement) was loudly applauded. Jesse in particular, regularly reminded the audience of the reason why money was needed for K9 and invited them to dig deeper into their pockets and handbags.

Rosemary Eden had a touch of the Bette Midler about her and her trademark rapport with male members of the audience went down well with those on the receiving end!

It was now 12.30am and raffles were drawn and prizes distributed to the lucky winners.

Sadly, once this was completed, the majority of people decided it was time to go home and the final act of the night, Aidy Evans, performed to only a handful of patrons. This was a shame because his 60’s and 70’s tribute was a delight and gave us young elderly the opportunity to sing along to many classics.

Mike Edwards held the whole show together with his usual witty and workmanlike performance.

It is now the morning after the function and too early to state how much the evening raised, though a minimum of €400 is widely anticipated.

Thanks go to lots of people, principally the artists, the young & attractive bar staff, Gloria & Dave who arranged the show, K9 helpers and supporters, and the patrons who turned up and were generous with their cash towards raffles, tombola, book sales, etc.

An excellent 5 hour show of none stop entertainment, widely appreciated.

K9 Press Release

Refugio de Animales de Tenerife - K9 and Amigos de Los Animales Los Gigantes (FOTA)

We would like to remind the general public of our duty to the stray animals of Tenerife. The Charities were formed in 1993 and our aims are to try and reduce the number of stray dogs and cats in the south of Tenerife.

Recently, thanks to the current economic climate in Tenerife (as well as elsewhere) many people, through no fault of their own, have lost their jobs and therefore their income, and are placed in a position of having to return to the UK without their animals. In the past we at K9 and FOTA have always felt this was unreasonable and they should have taken their animals with them. However, things have changed drastically and we are, together with the other charities on the island, now placed in a very difficult situation, and we are still trying extremely hard to accomodate as many of these animals as we can.

Our kennels at K9 can reasonably take 70/80 dogs and 20 cats but after that we genuinely have no room until some of the animals are re-homed, and we are having to ask people to ring the police on 112 for their help. In this way perhaps the relevant Ayuntamientos will realise the situation and may do something about it (EG give us funds and land to build a larger refuge?). Perhaps there is someone out there who can suggest an alternative solution to what is, in our opinion, an unacceptable compromise.
