K9 VOLUNTEERS EVENT

K9 VOLUNTEERS EVENT

Tuesday 10th August at 7pm            Tuesday 3rd August at 7pm
Yela´s Bar, Los Cristianos             Avenue Cafe, Coral Mar, Silencio

“I´d really like to give something back”
“I´m at a bit of a loose end”
“I´d just like to help”
“I´m looking for something worthwhile to do with my time”
“Now that I´ve retired…”
“I´ve always wanted to…but never got round to it”
“You can´t get a job without experience, and you can´t get experience without a job!”

There are lots of good reasons for volunteering but perhaps the most persuasive is, quite simply, that voluntary work is rewarding.

If you´re looking for something ‘extra’ in your life, volunteering could be right for you.

We´re inviting anyone who is interested to come along to our volunteer event, when you´ll be able to chat to some of our existing volunteers and committee about all there is to do with K9 in the south of Tenerife. We hope some of our existing volunteers are able to join us.   Light refreshments will be provided.

There will be a short presentation on the main areas of volunteering (campaigning, fundraising, awareness raising, befriending, helping at events, assisting at the kennels etc.).

If you can spare anytime from one hour a fortnight to several hours a week, every little helps.

There is no obligation to ‘sign up’ – just come along if you are interested.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer but unable to attend either Event, please contact Mikey on 922 752415 or email him at  HYPERLINK "mailto:mikebtenerife@yahoo.co.uk" mikebtenerife@yahoo.co.uk who will be pleased to answer some of your queries.

Wooftastic K9 Puppy Calender

Have you ever seen a skateboarding dog ? or a pooch making music on a laptop ? or a pup driving a truck ?

No ... ? Well you might be about to make their acquaintance when K9 launch their wooftastic 2011 calendar, featuring puppies from the rescue shelter in a variety of cute, fun and unusual settings.

These images will brighten up anybody´s wall throughout 2011, and the calendar is certain to appeal to a wide market. Everyone loves puppies – especially when they're as cute as these cheeky chappies !

But K9 need your help to bring these wonderful woofers to a wall near you. K9 receives no funding from any official body, and relies solely on the generosity of the general public, so they really need sponsors to help finance the project.

For a small donation, your business (or even a private individual) can sponsor a month in the calendar with their logo, advertising copy, and a message of support. For an even smaller donation you can share a page.

All profits from the calendar will go towards the ongoing costs of feeding and caring for the 80+ dogs and cats in the K9 kennels at San Miguel.

The photographer is Nikki Attree, who was one of the photographers for the highly acclaimed 2009 K9 calendar of Tenerife entertainers with their pets. Nikki is also the web editor for TenerifeDogs.com which is regularly featured in ´Island Connections`, ´Canarian Weekly`, and ´Tenerife News` and the calendar will be sure to get plenty of media attention and on-line publicity.

It's planned to have 500 calendars printed and to have a Launch Party in the Los Cristianos area in October.

If you'd like to support this wooftastic calendar then please contact Nikki by e-mail: nikki@tenerifedogs.com  or  telephone Neal Paterson or Mikey Braithwaite on 619 678 384 or email:  mikebtenerife@yahoo.co.uk

But don't delay - the sponsorship spaces are already being filled up and the K9 pups are going to be Big in 2011 !

K9 and Wingate School

Since it’s inception 15 years ago, K9 has good reason to be grateful to many loyal and generous supporters.
Some were only active in the early years and have fallen by the wayside for whatever reason. Many of us have only been involved for the past few years.

However, there is, thankfully, one significant group of people who have been consistently supportive for the past 13 years. They are the children, their parents and teachers of Wingate Junior School.

It all began in 1997, the brainchild of Penny Lister, a dog loving teacher at the school, who wanted to do something to help the stray and abandoned dogs at the new K9 Refuge at San Miguel.
In the first year, 21.000 pesetas was raised by the children, followed in 1998 by just under 35.000 pesetas (€207).

Sadly, Penny Lister passed away as a result of cancer, but the commitment to raise monies for the dogs, did not die with her. Penny’s enthusiasm was taken over by Mr Steve & Mrs Carol Hill at the school and the funds continued to be raised by classes 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 in the junior school. Last year, €2794 was donated, whilst in 2010  €2970 has been gratefully received.

Just after Easter each year, the Headmaster Mr Green and Mr & Mrs Hill, invites the K9 President, Elsie Clinton-Leslie to visit the school to accept a cheque from the children.
Elsie used to take along encyclopaedias and dictionary’s for example, as a donation to the school library, but we now live in a computer age and books are becoming obsolete.
Elsie converses with the children about responsible dog ownership and a number of children, have over the years, attended the kennels on a weekend to walk some of the dogs.

Over the past 13 years, a magnificent total of €10.550 has been donated to K9 for which we are always very grateful.  K9 has a lot to thank Penny Lister for, and her legacy continues in the support of her colleagues and a future generation of children. We at K9 hope this support continues for many more years to come.

K9 Musical Gala Evening 11th May 2010

K9 Musical Gala Evening 11th May 2010

There was a sense of anticipation both inside and outside the Starlights Cabaret Bar at Coral Mar Square in Costa Del Silencio, as the previous gala evening in November 2009 had been brilliant.
The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness and money to support the abandoned dogs and cats at the K9 kennels in San Miguel. Supporters were out in force selling raffle & tombola tickets, getting punters to name a cat and a dog, selling K9 t shirts, key rings, books, DVD’s and videos.
Seven acts were kind enough to donate their time and talents to this worthy cause.

First up was John Ashford with his brilliant Buddy Holly Appreciation Show. This had the audience either foot tapping or rocking on the dance floor.
Charlie Hodge is a relative newcomer to K9 audiences but his Neil Diamond tribute went down very well and we hope to see him again in the future.
Aidy Evans received a standing ovation for his very polished 60’s and 70’s tribute where he sang some numbers publicly for the first time.
An Auction was conducted by the larger than life Geraldine who brought a sense of fun into the occasion and persuaded some generous punters to (successfully) part with their euros.
The interval provided respite and the excellent Buffet provided by Chrissy was well worth waiting for.

The K9 President Elsie Clinton-Leslie kicked off the second half by presenting a Certificate of Thanks to Christine & Raymond Berry for their fundraising activities in the UK. They visit Tenerife each year and spend their holiday by visiting the kennels each day to walk the dogs. Once they return to Bedford, Chris & Ray begin the fundraising process once again, and along with their friends, have raised several hundred pounds for K9 over the years. Ray has now retired and Chris volunteers at a Cattery. Well done.
Elsie also publicly thanked the K9 committee and volunteers who were present and insisted they join her on stage to accept a round of applause from the audience.
Rosemary Eden had a touch of the Bette Midler style about her and her trademark rapport with male members of the audience in particular, was appreciated by those on the receiving end!
Christine Kay belted out songs that suited her style to perfection. Over the years she has become a favourite to K9 audiences with her extraordinary talent. Small body with a huge voice!
Jesse Goran provided a wide variety of old favourites ranging from Country & Western to Rock & Roll and brought the enjoyable evening to a close.
Mike Edwards held the whole show together with his usual witty and workmanlike performance, ably assisted by Mandy on the Sound System.

Raffles were drawn and prizes distributed to the lucky winners.

Thanks go to lots of people, principally the artists, the bar staff, Gloria & Dave who arranged the show, K9 helpers and supporters, and the patrons who turned up and were generous with their cash towards raffles, tombola, book sales, name the cat, name the dog as well as the auction.
An excellent 4 hour show of non-stop entertainment, widely appreciated.
€700 was raised which goes towards the care of the dogs and cats at the kennels. Thanks very much.

LOVING HOME URGENTLY WANTED FOR REX

The Guardia Civil found this lovely boy Husky wandering on the main road with a heavy chain round his neck. He had a microchip so they were able to trace his owner in Adeje, who was distraught to hear about his dog and told the following story.
Rex’s owner is leaving Tenerife in June and cannot take his dog with him. A ‘friend’ offered Rex a home on his finca where he can run free. Instead, he was confined on a heavy chain which he managed to snap and go in search of his master.
The two men from the Guardia were real dog lovers and fell in love with Rex. It was evening and Guia de Isora does not have a dog pound. They were unable to contact the owner at that time so they took the dog to Barbara & David Smith (of Friends of the Animals) for help, who arranged for Rex to stay overnight at a boarding kennel. The dog’s owner agreed to pay the boarding fee and his dog is still being cared for at the kennel.
This Husky is used to a loving home so we are making this plea…
IS THERE ANOTHER LOVING HOME WAITING FOR REX?
IF YOU ARE THAT PERSON, PEASE RING KARIN ON 677 885 634 OR
DAVID AND BARBARA ON 922 852 182

What you can do…
In our organisation time is a big factor and we are always in need of people who can give some of their time to us, as there are never enough people to get the tasks done. If you are able to help with any of the following tasks please contact the relevant people. THANK YOU.

We are in need of good quality bric a brac and other suitable car boot items. These can be delivered directly to the kennels during opening hours. Open every day from 10.30am till 1.30pm, or if you need the items to be collected then please call Pat on 608121081 or Kenny on 627096518 to arrange collection. (No large furniture items please). We also need volunteers to help at the car boot sales and other fundraising events that take place, please call Pat.

The dogs like to be taken out of the kennels for a change, so we are always happy when dog walkers turn up. You are always welcome at the kennels any day from 9.30am till 1.30pm. Please have sensible footwear and a drink. Respect the advice given about each individual dog.

If anyone is interested in assisting primarily with our cats, we do need help with trapping and neutering as required, or help on a morning from 9am at the Kennel Cattery. Tel 667638468.

Occasionally we need foster parents for a dog or a cat. They may need special care or just TLC due to illness, broken bones, or some other reason. If you would be interested in fostering please contact the kennels on 667638468.

We are forever on the lookout for new fundraising ideas; if you would like to arrange a fundraising event on our behalf, or have any ideas, please contact any of the numbers below.

Forthcoming Events to note.
Tues 11th May at Starlights Cabaret Bar. All Star Entertainment from 8pm. See separate details.
Fri 10th December. K9 Christmas Dinner/Fundraiser. Make a note in your diary for now please.

Due primarily to the ‘credit crunch’ K9 and other refuges are feeling the effects of more cats and dogs needing to be re-homed. Please think carefully before taking on a pet – dogs and cats need to have their injections up to date, six months prior to leaving Tenerife. It is also very expensive to take them back to the UK. If our kennels are full please contact the police (Tel 112) in the district you reside (as a last resort).

The K9 Officers & Committee are grateful for the continued support to our abandoned animals from the general public in these very difficult times financially.

Any Bar that has a Red K9 Collection Box, if it is more than half full, will you please contact the name on the box or Pat the Cat on 608121081 to arrange collection. Thanks.

People often ring to ask “Where are your kennels”.  They are at Las Chafiras on the San Miguel side of the motorway. Follow the San Miguel road for 400 metres, you will see the First Impressions Building on your right hand side. After a further 300 metres you will see a road off to the right. Continue on this road for approx a mile. The kennels are on the right on a bend. Car parking opposite the entrance.

K9 News

A Night at the Races was  held at the Starlights Cabaret Bar in Lower Coral Mar Square, Costa Del Silencio, last night. Though only a couple of dozen punters attended, those that did were very generous and an enjoyable night was had by all. The night had been arranged by Chrissy & Mark from the Great British Chippy, with assistance from Gareth at Starlights Bar and many others (you know who you are, thankyou).
There was the usual tombola, book stall, and several raffle prizes kindly donated by K9 supporters and friends. Winning horse owners also received great prizes and there were many happy faces leaving the event in the early hours of this morning, laden with all sorts of goodies. Smirnoff shares must have peaked this last couple of days!

The stew and crusty bread supper was in keeping with Chrissy’s usual high standard
€600 was raised which will go some way in paying the vets bills and pet food of the 80 plus dogs and 20 cats at the kennels. The K9 officers and committee appreciate the hard work that goes into fundraising and thank once again so many people who made the evening a success, both socially and financially.

The next planned event is at the same venue on Tuesday 11th May when a Gala Charity Evening of Entertainment is being held.

Mike Edwards will compere and Mandy will do her usual excellent job in taking care of the sound system. Starring Cy Benson, Rosemary Eden, Christine Kaye, Charlie Hodge as Neal Diamond, John Ashford as Buddy Holly and Jesse Garon as himself, it promises to be another excellent night.
It all gets underway at 8pm and the €5 entrance fee also includes supper provided by Gareth. There will be the usual tombola, book stall, auction and raffle, with many excellent prizes once again. There will also be K9 t shirts and key rings for sale.
Guests are invited to bring along a tin of dog or cat food, biscuits or treats for the 4 legged guys back at the kennels.

It is possible to reserve a table by contacting Gloria on 639 028 034 or by calling in at the Starlights Cabaret Bar.

Sat 10th April at Starlights Cabaret Bar, Silencio. A Night at the Races. 8pm till late. Free Entry & Hot Supper for €3. Lots of fun to be had whilst raising monies for the animals.
Tues 11th May at Starlights Cabaret Bar. All Star Entertainment from 8pm. More info later.
