What you can do…
In our organisation time is a big factor and we are always in need of people who can give some of their time to us, as there are never enough people to get the tasks done. If you are able to help with any of the following tasks please contact the relevant people. THANK YOU.

We are in need of good quality bric a brac and other suitable car boot items. These can be delivered directly to the kennels during opening hours. Open every day from 10.30am till 1.30pm, or if you need the items to be collected then please call Pat on 608121081 or Kenny on 627096518 to arrange collection. (No large furniture items please). We also need volunteers to help at the car boot sales and other fundraising events that take place, please call Pat.

The dogs like to be taken out of the kennels for a change, so we are always happy when dog walkers turn up. You are always welcome at the kennels any day from 9.30am till 1.30pm. Please have sensible footwear and a drink. Respect the advice given about each individual dog.

If anyone is interested in assisting primarily with our cats, we do need help with trapping and neutering as required, or help on a morning from 9am at the Kennel Cattery. Tel 667638468.

Occasionally we need foster parents for a dog or a cat. They may need special care or just TLC due to illness, broken bones, or some other reason. If you would be interested in fostering please contact the kennels on 667638468.

We are forever on the lookout for new fundraising ideas; if you would like to arrange a fundraising event on our behalf, or have any ideas, please contact any of the numbers below.

Due primarily to the ‘credit crunch’ K9 and other refuges are feeling the effects of more cats and dogs needing to be re-homed. Please think carefully before taking on a pet – dogs and cats need to have their injections up to date, six months prior to leaving Tenerife. It is also very expensive to take them back to the UK. If our kennels are full please contact the police (Tel 112) in the district you reside (as a last resort).

K9 have  2 skilled seamstresses, a TV engineer and 2 experienced Dog Walkers/Sitters, who offer special prices to other K9 supporters for any work undertaken

The K9 Officers & Committee are grateful for the continued support to our abandoned animals from the general public in these very difficult times financially.

Any Bar that has a Red K9 Collection Box, if it is more than half full, will you please contact the name on the box or Pat the Cat on 608121081 to arrange collection. Thanks.

People often ring to ask “Where are your kennels”.  They are at Las Chafiras on the San Miguel side of the motorway. Follow the San Miguel road for 400 metres, you will see the First Impressions Building on your right hand side. After a further 300 metres you will see a road off to the right. Continue on this road for approx a mile. The kennels are on the right on a bend. Car parking opposite the entrance.

Live Arico - Whats your point of view..?

2/9/2012 - Since writing this post Live Arico have now been closed down and the dogs are under the care of Fecapap and a new Refuge in Fasnai.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The photos in this post  were sent to me by a volunteer who helps out  at the Live Arico rescue centre,  and one was originally posted on the Tenerife forum

I recently visited the centre and I honestly have to say that the kennels and the dogs generally are in a bit of a sad state. Live Arico say that they are doing the best that they can with very limited recourses, but some people have expressed the opinion that it would be better for the dogs if the centre were to be shut down.

The purpose of this post is not to take sides, but to pose some questions for all those involved to think about carefully ...

1. Is it better for dogs to live in overcrowded (and potentially worse) conditions in rescue kennels, or are they better off on the street fending for themselves ?

2. if Live Arico were to be closed down, then where would the dogs go ? Presumably a lot of them would have too be put down, so is this a viable option ? nb of course some dogs from Live Arico do indeed find homes eventually.

3. Then there's the difficult and controversial issue of Euthanasia. Is it better to keep alive say an elderly dog with a terminal illness ? or a dog which is aggressive / potentially vicious and is very unlikely to find a home ? ... keeping it alive might well be detrimental to the other dogs in the kennels. Is it more cruel to keep a dog alive when it can have no real quality of life, than it is to 'put it to sleep' ?

So those are just a few of the difficult questions involved in this complex issue. Tenerife Dogs website aims to try and take a balanced point of view and puts the interests of the dogs above anything else. We would urge everyone to look for solutions that are in the dogs best interests, not to look for the negative but to facilitate positivity.

For instance, we would suggest that if anybody is thinking of getting a dog, adopting from Live Arico means one less dog living in difficult, overcrowded conditions.

Tenerife Dogs hopes to able to continue to support Live Arico by publicising fund-raising events and encouraging donations of time & money, so that conditions can be improved for the doggies, but we feel that it's our duty to raise issues which might not be very dog-friendly - as we have done in past stories here

We would welcome your thoughts - you can post them in the comments section.
Quote from - Sue Havenhand, Vice President of live Arico (LAAP)
We at Live Arico are more than aware of the dire situation in the present location. It is not fit for the purpose and is overcrowded, which is why we have been desperately searching for a piece of land for some considerable time. Although this is now almost a reality, wheels turn very slowly here and all we can do is sit it out and wait. A further complication is that the refuge is now not even safe following a rock fall due to recent heavy rains.

Despite conditions at the refuge however, I still do not believe that dogs roaming the streets is a better option. At least with Eugenio they are fed and have a possibility of rehoming. Many of our dogs were sent to Germany for rehoming last year, and their happy end tales can be read on www.livearico.de , it is lovely to see them running in gardens and enjoying themselves.

Eugenio has provided a service to the Ayuntamientos in the south for several years, and is the first port of call for the police and authorities when dealing with abandoned animals, so he does have more animals than the other refuges, yet sadly has probably the worst location for a refuge.
We are currently working hard to bring about change, and we believe a change of location will be the beginning of a better situation for the dogs.

With regard to euthanasia, Live Arico shares the ethos of the Dogs Trust, who "never put a healthy dog to sleep".We thank Tenerife Dogs for bringing our plight to a wider audience, and can only say again, please consider a Live Arico dog for your pet.

Aktiontier - Dog Rescue Shelter

I recently visited AktionTier to show some friends around and was privileged to see the birth of 7 puppies ( Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me so can't show you photos).

While I was there Marion the Director of AktionTier explained to us the policy she has of taking abandoned dogs into her shelter. Marion discourages people from bringing stray dogs straight to Aktiontier and if someone brings an abandoned/stray dog to the shelter they are asked to go to the police dog pound first to hand them in to be checked if they have been micro-chipped and if the owners can be found.

Like the other dog rescue shelters AktionTier welcomes volunteers to walk the dogs, the shelter is open from 3pm to 6pm, lots of room to walk a dog around the rescue shelter and you are able to take a walk on the beach if you wish.

AktionTier is located in the Granadilla Industrial estate  take the first exit off to the Granadilla industrial estate, exit A, as you are going North. When you turn off the motorway head for the windmills as the rescue shelter is close by.

Rescue dogs and how to bond with your new Pal..

Dogs that come from rescue shelters can have  physical and behavioural problems. They may have been abused or neglected . So it may take a while even months for your new friend to trust you and settle into his new home, so be patience.

Recently a friend of mind adopted a very cute little dog (Katy) from a rescue shelter ( Aktiontier). Katy was very nervous at first , but her owner ( Sally ) has been very patience and calm with her new doggy friend and allowed Katy some space to get used to her new home. Not having too many people coming around to visit is probably a good idea at the beginning. Now Katy is very affectionate and will even have a little woof when somebody comes to the door, which means she is protecting her territory, her home..!

Katy with her new Mum

Some experts  advise walking your dog to their new home, rather than driving, the idea behind this is that the dog will immediately have a sense that this is their new home. Park a few streets away maybe and walk the rest of the way.

There are experts of course that can advise you if you feel that your new dog is taking too long to settle in his forever home.

Steph a dog trainer, Vet nurse and groomer ( who lives in Tenerife) has had a lot of experience of looking after rescue dogs she fosters dogs from Live Arico.
Tel Steph on 628859973

If any doggy experts out there have any tips on getting a  rescue pooch settled in his or her new home please leave a comment below... Thanks:)
