Dog Concert
A special concert for dogs is to be held outside the Sydney Opera house. Humans will not be able to hear it, as it will be played in a high frequency. The concert is composed by Lou Reed and his wife Laurie Anderson . Apparently they have had experience of making music before for dogs, and composed a tune for their Terrier, Loolabelle.
Sorry but I have to say these humans sound a bit barking too me !. Don't they realise dogs only listen to Puccini and of course Bach.
I also hope there are enough public conveniences on the night, I wouldn't want to be queuing like these guys.

La Esperanza
I Visited La Esperanza in Adeje, with Stuart who often volunteers his time in the rescue shelters . Marisa Traen met us at the gate of her refuge and we walked past an area where most of the dogs are allowed to run around, they all seem to be happy and they certainly had plenty of room. We were then shown around the kennels and were glad to see only a few dogs in each kennel, except for the 5 puppies and their surrogate mum a male pooch !
La Esperanza has some great volunteers , but of course Marisa would be grateful for more help, for example with cleaning and donations of dog food, plus anyone who has building experience and is willing to donate their time that would be great.
Marisa told me that all the dogs that come in her refuge are castrated, which is especially important for the ones who live in the open large plot. She firmly believes in sterilisation and her own dogs also have been castrated. The maximum number of dogs she will have at one time is 60 dogs
The boarding kennels help towards the cost of running the refuge. But funding of the refuge is largely done by fund-raising through market stalls etc. and donations. A washing machine was donated recently by a kind member of Tenerife forum .
To find out more about volunteering and making a donation phone Marisa on 679 161 682

Five rescue pups being looked after by their surrogate mum, a male pooch !
Marisa started the refuge approx 8 years ago, It developed from opening up a boarding kennel 'Petsworld Dog Hotel' and finding unfortunately some people started to leave abandoned dogs on her doorstep. So then La Esperanza was born. Marisa has established connections with many other rescue centres in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and France, with whom she has established close and ongoing contact.

Manos Amigas de Los Animales De Tenerife
I visited a new rescue shelter on Sunday, Manos Amigas De Los Animales De Tenerife in Charco del Pino. I was greeted at the gate by Regina and Dominique who run the shelter and four happy dogs .
Dominique Whitby with a rescue pup
Regina
MADAT often finds homes for dogs in Germany read about Tarzan's 'Happy Tail' story click here. Dominique and Regina are always on the look out for flight escorts, please click here for more information
At the moment there are some puppies at the shelter , ( see pics) if anyone is interested in adopting any of these cuties or any of the other dogs or cats and or would like to make a donation of dog or cat food please ring Regina on 669 668512. Regina speaks three languages German, English and Spanish.

Manos Amigas is a small refuge offering shelter for 20 dogs and 50 cats. Dominique explained to me that this is the maximum number they can safely manage and take proper care of. That definitely sounds like a sensible approach.
The aim of refuge is to offer shelter to those animals who for one reason or another cannot remain in a normal refuge, for example, injured animals requiring special care. Traumatized dogs and cats, which have been mistreated and need careful, patient and loving handling.
Dominique is a trained veterinary nurse and her knowledge obviously is very useful, when any of the animals are sick.

K9 and Wingate School
Since it’s inception 15 years ago, K9 has good reason to be grateful to many loyal and generous supporters.
Some were only active in the early years and have fallen by the wayside for whatever reason. Many of us have only been involved for the past few years.
However, there is, thankfully, one significant group of people who have been consistently supportive for the past 13 years. They are the children, their parents and teachers of Wingate Junior School.
It all began in 1997, the brainchild of Penny Lister, a dog loving teacher at the school, who wanted to do something to help the stray and abandoned dogs at the new K9 Refuge at San Miguel.
In the first year, 21.000 pesetas was raised by the children, followed in 1998 by just under 35.000 pesetas (€207).
Sadly, Penny Lister passed away as a result of cancer, but the commitment to raise monies for the dogs, did not die with her. Penny’s enthusiasm was taken over by Mr Steve & Mrs Carol Hill at the school and the funds continued to be raised by classes 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 in the junior school. Last year, €2794 was donated, whilst in 2010 €2970 has been gratefully received.
Just after Easter each year, the Headmaster Mr Green and Mr & Mrs Hill, invites the K9 President, Elsie Clinton-Leslie to visit the school to accept a cheque from the children.
Elsie used to take along encyclopaedias and dictionary’s for example, as a donation to the school library, but we now live in a computer age and books are becoming obsolete.
Elsie converses with the children about responsible dog ownership and a number of children, have over the years, attended the kennels on a weekend to walk some of the dogs.
Over the past 13 years, a magnificent total of €10.550 has been donated to K9 for which we are always very grateful. K9 has a lot to thank Penny Lister for, and her legacy continues in the support of her colleagues and a future generation of children. We at K9 hope this support continues for many more years to come.

K9 Musical Gala Evening 11th May 2010
K9 Musical Gala Evening 11th May 2010
There was a sense of anticipation both inside and outside the Starlights Cabaret Bar at Coral Mar Square in Costa Del Silencio, as the previous gala evening in November 2009 had been brilliant.
The purpose of the evening was to raise awareness and money to support the abandoned dogs and cats at the K9 kennels in San Miguel. Supporters were out in force selling raffle & tombola tickets, getting punters to name a cat and a dog, selling K9 t shirts, key rings, books, DVD’s and videos.
Seven acts were kind enough to donate their time and talents to this worthy cause.
First up was John Ashford with his brilliant Buddy Holly Appreciation Show. This had the audience either foot tapping or rocking on the dance floor.
Charlie Hodge is a relative newcomer to K9 audiences but his Neil Diamond tribute went down very well and we hope to see him again in the future.
Aidy Evans received a standing ovation for his very polished 60’s and 70’s tribute where he sang some numbers publicly for the first time.
An Auction was conducted by the larger than life Geraldine who brought a sense of fun into the occasion and persuaded some generous punters to (successfully) part with their euros.
The interval provided respite and the excellent Buffet provided by Chrissy was well worth waiting for.
The K9 President Elsie Clinton-Leslie kicked off the second half by presenting a Certificate of Thanks to Christine & Raymond Berry for their fundraising activities in the UK. They visit Tenerife each year and spend their holiday by visiting the kennels each day to walk the dogs. Once they return to Bedford, Chris & Ray begin the fundraising process once again, and along with their friends, have raised several hundred pounds for K9 over the years. Ray has now retired and Chris volunteers at a Cattery. Well done.
Elsie also publicly thanked the K9 committee and volunteers who were present and insisted they join her on stage to accept a round of applause from the audience.
Rosemary Eden had a touch of the Bette Midler style about her and her trademark rapport with male members of the audience in particular, was appreciated by those on the receiving end!
Christine Kay belted out songs that suited her style to perfection. Over the years she has become a favourite to K9 audiences with her extraordinary talent. Small body with a huge voice!
Jesse Goran provided a wide variety of old favourites ranging from Country & Western to Rock & Roll and brought the enjoyable evening to a close.
Mike Edwards held the whole show together with his usual witty and workmanlike performance, ably assisted by Mandy on the Sound System.
Raffles were drawn and prizes distributed to the lucky winners.
Thanks go to lots of people, principally the artists, the bar staff, Gloria & Dave who arranged the show, K9 helpers and supporters, and the patrons who turned up and were generous with their cash towards raffles, tombola, book sales, name the cat, name the dog as well as the auction.
An excellent 4 hour show of non-stop entertainment, widely appreciated.
€700 was raised which goes towards the care of the dogs and cats at the kennels. Thanks very much.
LOVING HOME URGENTLY WANTED FOR REX
The Guardia Civil found this lovely boy Husky wandering on the main road with a heavy chain round his neck. He had a microchip so they were able to trace his owner in Adeje, who was distraught to hear about his dog and told the following story.
Rex’s owner is leaving Tenerife in June and cannot take his dog with him. A ‘friend’ offered Rex a home on his finca where he can run free. Instead, he was confined on a heavy chain which he managed to snap and go in search of his master.
The two men from the Guardia were real dog lovers and fell in love with Rex. It was evening and Guia de Isora does not have a dog pound. They were unable to contact the owner at that time so they took the dog to Barbara & David Smith (of Friends of the Animals) for help, who arranged for Rex to stay overnight at a boarding kennel. The dog’s owner agreed to pay the boarding fee and his dog is still being cared for at the kennel.
This Husky is used to a loving home so we are making this plea…

Why People Do Rescue
Came across this article on a online Dogs Magazine, it explains about the situations and people who unfortunately are more concerned with their own personal gratification than the welfare of the rescue animals.
Honestly some humans its an absolute disgrace.! Fortunately there are many kind rescue people who do care about us pooches and do things in the correct way, thank goodness..!
The examples given in this article, are people who take on pure-bred dogs from a rescue shelter for the sole purpose of breeding and making money by selling. Often they inbreed the dogs so inevitably the dogs end up with severe health problems
People who spend a lot of time talking about how great they are , and rescue everything and subsequently end up with a huge collection of animals which they can't possibly look after properly, and they don't spay, castrate, take the animals to a vet. Also don't euthanize sick or aggressive animals because they '"love them too much"

Safety - Children and Dogs
Here's an interesting article on the BBC website concerning the safety of children around dogs, according to this article in 2006/07 over 900 children aged under nine were admitted to hospitals with injuries caused by dogs in the UK.
So take heed kiddies no pulling of our tails, running around and screaming at us and leave us alone when we are eating that is definitely a big no no !. Doggies do not like being disturbed when munching their dinner. Treat us with respect please and we will be your best friend..

What to do if you need to take your dog back to the UK from Tenerife:
No matter how much you might convince yourself that you will never leave this island, sometimes situations are beyond your control. If you have a dog then it is best to be prepared, after all, why leave you best mate behind when it is so easy to take them with you now?
In order to get your dog into the UK you will need to ensure they are microchipped and have their annual vaccination up to date (this is the one which covers Parvovirus, Distemper, Leptospirosis, Hepatitis, and Parainfluenza). Also you will need to have vaccinated them against Rabies AND carried out the blood test.
There is a 6 month period from the date the blood is taken for testing where the dog is not allowed to set foot on UK Soil. (They can be flown back in this time however they will be immediately quarantined at the other end for however long remains). Once you have had the initial blood test you WON'T need to keep this up each year. As long as the Rabies vaccination is administered over here annually on exactly the same date or shortly before, the blood test need not be done again. So, as long as you have seen to all of the above prior to the decision to move, there is no reason why your dog can’t travel with you.
When it comes to actually leaving, be sure to obtain an Airline Approved Container which allows the dog to stand and turn inside it, also ensure that the airline does actually accept dogs (if you wish to take them on the same flight as you). Twenty to forty eight hours before flying, the dog will need to see the vet for one final check up to ensure he is healthy enough to travel and has been de-flead and wormed.
So, be sure to take your fluffy friend with you if you return to the UK. As long as you are prepared, they are just as welcome on board the plane as you are.
