K9 Press Release

Refugio de Animales de Tenerife - K9 and Amigos de Los Animales Los Gigantes (FOTA)

We would like to remind the general public of our duty to the stray animals of Tenerife. The Charities were formed in 1993 and our aims are to try and reduce the number of stray dogs and cats in the south of Tenerife.

Recently, thanks to the current economic climate in Tenerife (as well as elsewhere) many people, through no fault of their own, have lost their jobs and therefore their income, and are placed in a position of having to return to the UK without their animals. In the past we at K9 and FOTA have always felt this was unreasonable and they should have taken their animals with them. However, things have changed drastically and we are, together with the other charities on the island, now placed in a very difficult situation, and we are still trying extremely hard to accomodate as many of these animals as we can.

Our kennels at K9 can reasonably take 70/80 dogs and 20 cats but after that we genuinely have no room until some of the animals are re-homed, and we are having to ask people to ring the police on 112 for their help. In this way perhaps the relevant Ayuntamientos will realise the situation and may do something about it (EG give us funds and land to build a larger refuge?). Perhaps there is someone out there who can suggest an alternative solution to what is, in our opinion, an unacceptable compromise.
