If anyone is interested in assisting primarily with our cats, we do need help with trapping and neutering as required, or help on a morning from 9am at the Kennel Cattery. Tel 667638468.

Due primarily to the ‘credit crunch’ K9 and other refuges are feeling the effects of more cats and dogs needing to be re-homed. Please think carefully before taking on a pet – dogs and cats need to have their injections up to date, six months prior to leaving Tenerife. It is also very expensive to take them back to the UK. The K9 Officers & Committee are grateful for the continued support to our abandoned animals from the general public in these very difficult times financially.
Thanks to Taffy’s Bar at San Eugenio for the donation of €430 raised from Raffle for the Christmas Hamper.

Merry Christmas and a Wooftastic New Year

Taking a break now for the Christmas holidays. I will leave you with a Christmas Shelter Dog Poem.....

’Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full—we are lost, but not found.

Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care.

They’ll come to adopt us and give us the call,
“Come here, Max and Sparkie — come fetch your new ball!”

But now we sit here and think of the days
we were treated so fondly — we had cute, baby ways.

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew.
Now we’re no longer young and we’re no longer new.

So out the back door we were thrown like the trash.
They reacted so quickly — why were they so rash?

We “jump on the children,” “don’t come when they call,”
we “bark when they leave us,” “climb over the wall.”

We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.

If only they’d trained us, if only we knew,
we’d have done what they asked us and worshiped them, too.

We were left in the backyard, or worse, let to roam.
Now we’re tired and lonely and out of a home.

They dropped us off here and they kissed us goodbye…
“Maybe someone else will give you a try.”

So now here we are, all confused and alone
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can’t stay to chat.

They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer…
we know that they wonder how long we’ll be here.

We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.

Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears –
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

If you can’t adopt us and there’s no room at the inn –
could you help with the bills and fill our food bin?

We count on your kindness each day of the year –
can you give more than hope to everyone here?

Please make a donation to pay for the heat…
and help get us something special to eat.

The shelter that cares for us wants us to live,
and more of us will, if more people will give.

Basil's 10 Top Tips to give Pooches a stress free Christmas Holiday

Snoopy Dog Peanuts Comic Animated Avatars
1.Keep your pooch's feeding routine the same, there is nothing that will stress us out more than finding our dinner isn't in our bowl at the usual time ! Culture Hound says 'stressed I'd be absolutely livid'
2.Make sure your Pooch has a quiet place to go to if things get too noisy and hectic. Ideally a separate room so if we want to escape we are not trapped in a room with strangers. ( I think some humans would like this idea of a separate room as well )
3.If is not possible to take us out for a long walk, because you are busy, at the very least let us out into the garden so we can have some fresh air or go around the block once, a few times a day. It might be Christmas but we still need to go the toilet !
4.Don't let us drink any alcohol as only a little amount can put a small pooch into a coma, so keep half glasses of wine and beer off the floor out of our way.
5.If visiting friends or relatives are bringing their own cat or dog then make sure that introductions have already been made away from the house as territorial issues can arise. For example I can't get on with cats , I think it was a bad experience I had when I was a pup. I just have this incredible urge to chase them all the time.
6.Never leave any children alone with pets in the house, especially the very small variety that think we are a toy and start pulling on our tail, ears , etc. Very annoying, or even worse start dressing us up in Christmas outfits !
7.Don't give us loads of scraps from the table, (can't believe I am saying this ! ) Even if we turn on the big eyed soulful look. Fatty foods can cause us to have bad diarrhoea.
8.If there are medicines in the house keep them away from us pooches, and tell your guests who have to take medication at certain times to make sure they keep them safe.
9.Put Christmas paper and other gift wrapping materials away from us , when you have finished wrapping your Christmas presents. Sometimes we like to play with and chew paper, this could cause choking or blocked intestines. Not very nice !
10.Lastly but not least keep chocolate out of our way, chocolate is poisonous for us even in small amounts.
Muchas gracias
Basil :)

K9 Dinner/Fundraiser 11th December

Pic by nikki

The Rain in Spain SHOULD stay firmly on the plain!

Instead, having had no rain for several months, it chose to put in an unwelcome appearance during the evening at our open air venue at Bistro Del Mar. Fortunately the diners and staff were quickly able to move the tables to a more sheltered area and whet the appetites for what was to come later.

Earlier the 84 guests, supporters and helpers proved the BATman strategy had paid off handsomely. Ticket holders had been invited to bring along a choice of either cat food, dog food or treats, and the response was brilliant in that 3 x 20 kilo sacks were filled. There will be much tail wagging and purring at the kennels this Christmas. Thank you.

Upon arrival, guests were greeted by Hazel, Kennel Manager, with her photo display of K9 History of many of the dogs and cats who had been rescued and re-homed over the past several years. A second display featured the guys who are in the kennels at present and would like a new home. More information is at HYPERLINK "http://www.k9tenerife.com" www.k9tenerife.com or email at info@k9tenerife.com

Helpers managed to persuade supporters to part with their euros and there was a lot of activity between acts with the Tombola, Raffle ticket sales, Stand Up Sit Down Bingo and Name the Dog which all generated much needed funds. Thanks go to the many generous people who donated Maya vouchers, Freebird trips, Submarine trips, Showtime extravaganza trips, Cuddly toys, Books, Booze and a giant Hamper full of Christmas goodies.

The 7 Auction Lots provided a lot of interest, the highlight being a ceramic feline clock which raised €100 and Plates of Jack Russell Terriers, West Highland Terriers, a 2 hour personal fitness session from Danni Byrne and a 3 hour House clean by the Pink Mop, all met their reserves. Thanks again.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation to Dave McKenna of a Certificate of Appreciation. The K9 President, Elsie Clinton-Leslie detailed the significant work that Dave & Gloria had done over several years in trapping and rescuing cats, and latterly his work in building (single handedly) a cattery adjoining the kennels. It is so comfortable, the cats don’t want to move out!

Dave was roundly applauded and for the first time ever, was lost for words.

4 hours of entertainment was provided by Billy Porter, who toned down his act because children were present, but still managed some risqué but enjoyable fun.

John Ashford’s Buddy Holly Appreciation Show is always popular and this brought the dancers on to the floor to shake their hips and other bits.

Compere Aidy Evans kindly contributed his equipment for the evening and sang his 60’s and 70’s gems in between the other acts and did a sterling job on the night.

Rosemary Eden is a big hearted lady with an even bigger voice and the evening was rounded off by Jesse Garon and this brought the dancers to the floor again, with a range from Country to Rock and all things in between. Jesse has become a stalwart of charity gigs over the years and his love of dogs is massive.

K9 cannot thank the artists enough for their contributions, freely given and fondly appreciated.

The Carvery was excellent as is usual from this venue and the staff very attentive. It is in a very good position overlooking the sea at Fanabe and should attract more customers than it does.

The event raised a fabulous €1289 plus all the food donated for the animals at K9. With the Gala Evening at Starlight Bar on 17th November raising over a €1000 much needed funds have been generated.

Though much of this will go into the day to day pot of necessary expenses such as vet bills, kennel rent and water charges etc., it is hoped a small amount will be spent on a more permanent wooden canopy at the kennel entrance to shelter the caged dogs from the sun (and rain!)

Thanks to everyone who contributed to a successful evening.

BATman strategy is the Bring A Tin man!

Farting Pooches...!

I know farting dogs maybe a odd subject to be writing about , but to anyone who owns a dog I am sure can relate to that eye watering moment when your beloved pooch managed to clear the entire room with a single rather obnoxious smelly rip.

What I always find incredible is when your pooch looks at you in complete innocence after the deed is done , as to say 'what is the problem, its better out than in' . Of course that innocent look can be justified when said dog is being wrongly accused of your own flatulence problem

Flatulence is basically the accumulation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract when bacteria in the digestive tract break down food items. Any dog can suffer from it to differing degrees – some may get excessive flatulence. If your dog’s flatulence does become prolonged or excessive, of course you will need to consult your vet.

Some common causes of dog flatulence are food or diet related. For example:

1.“wolfing” down food. Eating too fast in other words.

2. Feeding your pooch food which will, in all likelihood, cause wind problems just like they might you. What happens if you eat too many, beans, or have too much garlic etc. Well feed them to your dog and he may well end up just as you would. I made the mistake of giving Basil some garlic chicken, boy did I regret that, it took two days to get through his system and visitors didn't stick around for long.

3. A poor quality diet – cheap dog food, leftovers etc

Tarzan's Story written by Dominique from Live Arico

Thank goodness for the kind humans at Live Arico this pooch who was found in a terrible state wandering near a roundabout, was one of the lucky strays and was picked up and cared for before it was too late !

Tarzans story of survival, written by Dominique, Secretary of Live Arico Animal Protection

It all started out as just another call to pick up a dog from the Traysesa Depot in Las Chafiras. (Traysesa are the people who clean up all the debris from our motorways and roads.)
This little dog was found wandering at the Los Cristianos round about. Cars were swerving in order not to hit it. We at Live Arico see a lot of unwanted and discarded animals in all states of neglect. But when Eugenio saw this little scrap that was lying in the Traysesa depot even he had to blink away the tears.
There on a blanket lay what looked like a discarded bundle of filthy hair. Eugenio immediately took the doggie to the vet in Las Chafiras.
Before the vet could even give a diagnosis, the animal had to be relieved of its fur.
The hair was so matted that it covered the whole of its face and the poor creature couldn’t see where it was going. The caked filth around its mouth meant that it could barely drink or eat.
When the hair around its eyes was cut away, blood and puss were oozing.
Once all the hair was cut away the little scrap of skin and bones was put on a drip to combat severe dehydration.
After three days of intensive veterinary care in Hospivet Sur, Las Chafiras, our little friend was ready to be released. As the Live Arico refuge has no adequate facilities for sick dogs, he was released into my care.
Caesar the vet prescribed lots of rest, good food and lots and lots of love.
I brought the 3.5kg scrap of poodle home with me and we called him Tarzan.
Not withstanding everything our latest addition to the family must have endured whilst he was roaming the streets, he loves the human contact. If possible he would spend his days curled upon my lap. At night he curls up by my side, gives a contented sigh and goes to sleep.
I would like to ask all the people who must have seen this little dog stumbling around Los Cristianos, “Why did you look away? Would it have really been that much of an inconvenience to pick up the phone and make a call to the police? Or take this dog to a vet?”
Mahatma Ghandi said: “We can judge the greatness of a nation by the way it treats its animals.”
Oops… going by this example and the ones that we at Live Arico (and no doubt at other shelters around the island) see on a regular basis; we are not scoring high marks there.
Have we really become so self-centred or have we become so afraid of being called busybodies or interfering so & so’s, that we look away, or pretend that we haven’t seen an animal in distress?
Have we become a nation totally without morals, values or compassion?

The Christmas season is upon us. No doubt in some families a little puppy will be joining the family.
Please, please , please in name of all the Tarzan’s, Bella’s, Theo’s, Jack’s etc… think long and hard before you decide to buy that cute little ball of fluff with the lovely big eyes.
These puppies soon grow up and will always depend on their human family for all of their needs, and this for the rest of their natural lives.
