Transporting your Pet from Tenerife to the UK

STEP BY STEP GUIDE - WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

Rabies
Take your pet to the Vet's to have his/her Rabies injection.  Approx cost  €25.

Blood Test

After they have had their Rabies injection - count 30 days (must not be under 30 days) or more than 3 months and take them to the Vet's for their blood test. Approx cost €50 - €70  depending if it is a cat or dog. A cat will be more expensive because he/she has to be sedated first.
You then wait for the results to come through approx 3/4 months to see if the blood test was correct for shipping your pet home. From the day of the blood test you have to count 6 months before your pet can fly to the UK.

Passport

You must make sure your pet has a Pet Passport - this is blue in colour with the European Sign on the front.  If you need to convert your current book to the Pet Passport the cost of this is €25

Travel Cage
You must make sure your cage for your animal is Airline Approved.  If it is for a dog the animal must be able to stand up and turn around and his/her head must not touch the top of the cage.
The cost of cages can vary, there are some good places where these are sold at a much cheaper rate than the Airport or Air Carrier.

Airline
There are many Pet Carriers from Tenerife to the UK - ring around for the best price.
Approximate price and this will vary from carrier to carrier is €600 for the first pet and approx €190 for every pet thereafter.  The maximum amount of animals per consignment is four.

Fit to fly
You must take your pet to the Vet's more than 24 hours before the pet fly's and no less than 48 hours.  The vet will administer tick and tapeworm treatment and give your pet one final health check and then produce a certificate that the pet is fit to fly on that given date.
The charge for this will be a nominal amount and will vary.

Annual injections
These must be up to date and not a day overdue.

If the above is adhered to then your pet will be able to enter the UK, customs clearance approx 2 hours. Your carrier should deal with all this and they will check all your documentation normally 24 hours before your pet is due to fly, to make sure all the above has been carried out properly. You will also find that your vet will advise you as you go.

Your Pet is Important !
Please give him/her the chance to go home with you and not to be given to the nearest Animal refuge.

Aktiontier Dog Agility Club

As has been mentioned in a previous post a new agility club is being set up by Steph Tufft and Karen Clack.

Directions to get to Aktiontier

On the TF1 going north from the airport towards Santa Cruz take the turning off for the Granadilla Industrial Port, exit A. Head towards the sea and windmills go straight across one roundabout when you reach the next roundabout veer right up towards the Ecological centre. You will stop and see a hut ( you can't go any further as their will be barrier and somebody outside the hut) Aktiontier is up a track on your right about a 100 metres...

Shirley Ann, Pet Sitter

Introducing Shirley Ann, pet sitter . 

I came to live in Tenerife August 2000. I bought with me my Great Dane Warwick and 4 cats.

In October, 2002 I was having a drink in a bar in Playa de Arena when in walked a couple with a lovely puppy called Billy.  "Does anyone want to adopt a dog" they said.  Well who could resist, a Labrador / Jack Russell cross and 8 weeks old. "We will" I said.  "Is he a well behaved puppy", I said.  "In a word they said he was very naughty, and he had been found tied to a bin in Los Gigantes, and they said they had taken him in on a fostered basis, until they could find a nice home.

So next day in walked little Billy, and at once chased the cat's but they were too quick for him, they could jump onto tables and chairs in a flash!  He is not what I call naughty he is very high spirited and gives us a lot of joy.  This October he will be coming up to 8 years old and we love him a great deal.

I set up Pets @ Home in 2010 after having adopted 6 animals. The first customer I had was an owner who wanted me to look after her 2 poodles for 2 weeks. The customer rang me up "frantic" saying she had to go to the UK with her partner because he needed cancer treatment straight away, and did not know how long for. Turned out 8 weeks later her partner sadly died, and she just did not know what to do for the best. After a lot of agonising over this, she decided she was going to stay in the UK and wanted me to look after her poodles for 7 months for their quarantine.

Star Rescue dog of the month - Scooby

Scooby is 8 months old an Alsation Cross, he is very loveable with a huge personality.. ! Loves the water and is good with children and other dogs.

Dog Concert

A special concert for dogs is to be held outside the Sydney Opera house. Humans will not be able to hear it, as it will be played in a high frequency. The concert is composed by Lou Reed and his wife Laurie Anderson . Apparently they have had experience of making music before for dogs, and composed a tune for their Terrier, Loolabelle. 

Sorry but I have to say these humans sound a bit barking too me !. Don't they realise dogs only listen to Puccini and of course Bach.

I also hope there are enough public conveniences on the night, I wouldn't want to be queuing like these guys.
