Accion-Del-Sol and new pooch which needed a major make-over !

This doggie came into Accion-Del -Sol , very badly matted its even difficult to see the dog underneath all the fur. - The vet and kind volunteers at the refuge cleaned him up and now he looks like a different pooch as you can tell from the After photo.

The poor dog must of been so uncomfortable and imagine the amount of fleas he had which would have be very painful due to the scratching of the skin. This is an extreme case of course . But its so important to keep your pooches fur groomed if he is of the long fur variety !

A year (and a bit) in the life of a K9 adoptee called Toto

Hello everyone. Well it seems such a long time since I was with all my old friends at K9 and such a lot has happened - new home, new family, new country and lots of new friends, but I still think about you all and thought you might like to know about my life after K9.

As you know, I had a bit of a miserable start in life – born in a refuge, adopted but then brought back (because I chewed – still do that but only my toys!) I was ill for a time and thought I was not going to make it but the guys at K9 pulled out all the stops and I gradually got better. I was still not at my best when my Mum, Lynn, started to help walk the dogs at K9 but she saw something in me that she liked and I was very good with her so we enjoyed our walks together.
I must have made a good impression because suddenly I was in a new home in Tenerife and had not only a new Mum but a Grandad as well – Jack.
He took a bit longer for me to get to know as I was not terribly keen on men but we are now best buddies! I had my own comfy bed and lots of toys to chew my way through. I was on my best behaviour in my new home though – no accidents indoors! I had lots of walks and also had my own garden.

I really enjoyed my trips in the car and still visited K9 when my Mum walked the other dogs there – I stayed in the car to keep an eye on Grandad who cannot walk very well but also kept an eye out for my old friends to say hello. I learnt lots of things in Tenerife – how to chase a ball – meeting new people – eating new foods as well as having lots of treats.

I was settling in really well and getting to know my routine when, in January 2011, there was the biggest change ever to my life. I was taken to the vet and given some tablets – I did a bit of a widdle in the surgery as I was a bit nervous but I don’t think anyone noticed. The next thing I know, I was put in a large crate and went on a longish journey in a strange vehicle – I found out later it was an aeroplane and I was off to England. I met some nice people at Gatwick Animal Centre who made a fuss of me, but I was very pleased when my Mum and one of my girlies collected me. I was allowed straight home as I had my own passport but boy let me tell you it was ffffreeeezing! My new home is on the south coast of England but it was till very cold.
My new house seemed strange at first – it is a lot bigger than Tenerife and has more rooms. There are soft carpets in every room and it is lovely and warm inside compared with outside. I have my own bed in my cage again but also have a second bed in another room so that I can keep an eye on all my family.

Springtime was really warm. Grandad spends a lot of time in the garden and I have to join him to check he is OK, keep an eye out for foxes, squirrels and badgers – oh and play with my ball. It is warm work though and I have to cool off with a nice drink.
I am still a bit shy with new dogs and people but my Mum took me to a dog training class where I learnt to be a bit more confident with other dogs (although some of them were total fruitcakes at first) and the man who ran the class thought I was excellent at walking and fetch. One of my favourite times now is my daily walkies in the morning. We go through the wood by my house and then onto my favourite place – the recreation ground where I have a good play with my ball and meet up with my pals.
I then often walk back home with my best pals Poppy and Daisy but I have to keep an eye on Poppy as now and again she nicks my favourite ball.
I do have a busy life now. I have to go to the shops, the recycling centre etc with Grandad every day to keep an eye on him and guard the car. We also go to my Mum’s new craft shop in our village to take her lunch – I sometimes stand guard to vet who comes in.

Anyway, that’s all for now. In the meantime, I have to get on with choosing which ball to take with me today.

My second class at Star Agility

I went to Star-South Tenerife Agility Ring yesterday had another fab afternoon with my furry amigos and the nice agility teacher Clare, with the help of her assistant Glenn showed us how to use some more of the equipment - It was great fun for the doggies and the humans. There was this rather horizontally challenged chap though waiting ouside the ring - don't think he has much hope of being able to join in though..!

My First Agility Class

I went to my first agility class yesterday with my mate Sammy and Nikki's pal Dominique Doring (Dog Trainer). The Agility class is held next to a banana plantation in the San Eugenio area, see here for directions click. In the first class, Clare our agility teacher demonstrated to us about how to use some of the equipment and we all had turns using it. There were 6 of us attending the class , that's the maximum of doggies they can teach in one go, as it then gives everybody a chance to have individual attention.

I thought I did very well and Clare the agility teacher was impressed. All of the doggies though did very well . It helps that Clare is such a kind and patience teacher . Shelly and her partner also agility trainers were there to give a helping hand and they are also very nice humans :)

Mi furry amiga the lovely Mercedes, started first with jumping over a pole followed by me and the other doggies . Our owners brought plenty of treats with them so we had incentive to jump over the poles. We were all quite exhausted including our owners when we finished, but it was great fun and a fantastic way to bond with your pooch. How I was rescued from the mean streets of Granadillia

Today I'm going to tell you the story of how I was rescued from the mean streets of Granadillia, adopted by Nikki and Richard, and got my job with Tenerife dogs.com.

About a year ago I was abandoned by my previous owners. Goodness knows why: maybe I grew too big, or perhaps my owners couldn't afford to keep me anymore ? Maybe I was woofing too much, or chewed up one too many pairs of their slippers ? ... who knows ?

It was very sad and lonely living on the streets, really difficult to find water or something to eat, and people kept shouting at me to go away !

Then one day I got lucky. The Proteccion Civil picked me up and took me to the dog refuge: Accion del Sol. The kind humans there gave me some water and something to eat. Their vet checked me to see if I had any injuries, and tested me for heart-worm which can be a very nasty illness for us pooches. I was de-flead (phew thank goodness, those pesky fleas were a real pain!), and I went to say hello to the other inmates in the cages there. One day I'll tell you all about some of the wonderful woofers that I met there, but for now let's get on with my story ...

Because I didn’t have a micro-chip or a collar, Accion del Sol couldn’t find my owner, so I had to wait with the other dogs until someone wanted to give me a home. Then I had another bit of luck. After only three days, the nice lady director of Accion del Sol: Marion found me a potential home with a local couple who's little Yorkie (Basil) had just died. When I first met my new family I was a liitle shy and timid, but then we went for a walk, and I got more confident and started to cheer up a bit. They decided that they'd try looking after me for a few days to see how I'd get on with them.

Before I could go to my new home though, I had to be castrated and micro-chipped. There are already far too many abandoned dogs without me adding to the problem with more puppies. Also it means that I'll probably live a bit longer, and be a happier pooch - so it's not as bad as it sounds ! Having a micro-chip means that if I get lost, the police or a rescue shelter can locate my owners.

The next day Nikki and Richard came to collect me, which was very exciting ! Marion gave me a farewell cuddle, and then I got in their car to go to my new home. When we go there, I started exploring straight away, and it wasn't long before I'd sniffed out some interesting smells, discovered the dog biscuits, and I felt quite at home straight away. Within about half-an-hour my foster family realised how cute I was (lucky I was on my best behaviour), and decided that they were going to keep me permanently !

Now I get lots of lovely walks; I've got my own bed; plenty of fun toys; bones to chew; and loads of cuddles. So I definitely have landed on my paws all right ! :-)

It wasn’t long before I was assigned the important role of SpokesMutt for TenerifeDogs.com, following in the paw steps of the late, great Basil, who was the first ambassador for TenerifeDogs . Nikki set up this website to support all the kind humans who help poor abandoned pooches like myself find a new home, and being a rescue dog myself I know only too well about the plight of abandoned dogs in Tenerife. I was very lucky to find a home quickly and land on my paws, but there are plenty of my mates still waiting for someone to give them a home. So, if you're thinking of making a pooch part of your family, a rescue dog would love to meet you ! If you do give them a home, there'll be one less pooch on the streets struggling to find food and shelter, and one less dog living in a cage in a rescue shelter.

Hazel has worked at the kennels since Jan 2003 where she began walking the dogs and progressed to become Kennel manager in 2008.

Despite no formal qualifications, it was an easy appointment for the committee to make, because of her experience and “can do” attitude. Hazel has been married for 26 years to Phil and they have 2 teenage children Daryl & Joanne. Has spent 6 years in Saudi Arabia, and South Africa for 2 years to follow her husband’s occupation in I.T. They returned to the UK in 1999 before moving to Tenerife in June 2002 bringing 2 of their cats with them. One of them Sassy, is now 13 years of age and has 10 other cats and a small dog Lucy for company. Hazel has fostered several cats for K9 over the years.

Hazel’s passion is badminton and plays in the Tenerife League, finishing third in the mixed doubles with partner Tony. Enjoys reading, loves gardening, growing fruit and vegetables and is a dab hand at making novelty cakes.

Her pet hates are housework and children who constantly leave plates and cups lying around!
Hazel loves her work at the kennels which is evident from the positive and polite way she conducts herself. K9 is very fortunate to have a manager who sets a good example to the team who work with her and is well respected by her colleagues. Once the kennels are closed for the day, she will often be called to investigate an abandoned dog or cat somewhere. A good egg.

Two female doggies need loving homes

Two female doggies (2-3 years old) need loving homes. One of the pooches is going to Germany via Live Arico :). Now there are two doggies left which need homes. As you will see by the photos, the doggies look a bit like me, though smaller so obviously are stunning !

As the law now has changed it is easier to send doggies to the UK so adopting a dog from Tenerife is much more feasible, so any UK readers please email if are you interested in adopting. One of the refuges in Tenerife in assocation with a Pet Hotel such as poochies pet hotel I am sure would help with the process of injections and putting the pooch on a plane.

Taking Pets to the UK

New rules will make it easier and cheaper to take pets to the United Kingdom from January 1st 2012.
Dog and cat owners will notice the difference as the UK will harmonise its pet movement rules with the rest of the European Union, bringing the UK’s Pet Travel Scheme into line with the most recent science.

The UK will maintain its high level of protection against animal diseases after the changes, which have the potential to save pet owners hundreds of pounds in fees.

However, forcing pets to spend six months in quarantine, a practice dating from the 1800’s is no longer necessary because of vastly improved rabies vaccines and treatments.

All pets will still need to be vaccinated against rabies but pets from the EU and Tenerife will no longer need a blood test and will only have to wait 21 days before they travel. The changes will ensure the risk of rabies coming to the UK remains extremely low.

The Health Protection Agency considers Spain a ‘no risk’ country for rabies. It is estimated the possibility of a person dying from rabies obtained from a pet, is once in 21,000 years!

The EU pet movement scheme has been working well for a decade and it makes sense for the UK to come into line with everyone else, making it easier and cheaper for those who wish to travel with their pets to the UK.

Dog tapeworm is common in Southern Spain so the UK must continue to protect the public against the risk of serious tapeworm infections, so tapeworm control will remain in force.
Tick treatment for pets returning to the UK will no longer be required.

Gizmo's 2012 New Year's Resolutions

My New Year's Resolutions:

1. I'll try not to chew Nikki’s slippers, watch, Yoga Dvd, or the book she's currently reading - and I promise not to eat the last page before she has a chance to finish it.

2. I'll be kind to the stupid looking Moggy-with-no-tail down the road, and I won't chase him (ah um, yes, well not that much). I'll also try and be nicer to cats in general. It's going to be difficult though: they really irritate me when they come into my garden and start prancing around with their noses in the air. A kind of red mist comes over me and I go all Tom-&-Jerry on them.

3. I won't eat the toilet rolls in the bathroom - gave me bad indigestion last time anyhow !

4. I won't fart when there are human friends around (it's a good way of getting them off the sofa though :-)

5. I won't slurp Nikki's coffee in the morning, she doesn't put enough sugar in it anyway (but if she will leave that last little bit lying around, what does she expect ?).

6. When I'm going to throw up I'll aim for the tiles, instead of the last remaining bit of clean rug (even though the rug smells much more interesting when I've thrown up on it).

7. I won't roll around in horse poo and then jump on the sofa. Apparently horse poo smells bad to humans - I just don't understand why ? ... smells fantastic to me (much better than the sofa anyway).

8. I won't stick my head in the dishwasher and lick the plates. I got my collar stuck in there once, and it wasn't a good place to spend a few hours.

9. I'll really try not to woof at the postman. On second thoughts, maybe thats a bit too unrealistic. Let's just say that I won't woof so hard that I bounce up and down. Will that do ? I mean he's there for us woofers to woof at - fact. Simple as that.

Fireworks and New Years Eve

Here are a couple of tips to make your furry friend feel safer: make sure your pooch has somewhere to hide. This could be under a bed, under the stairs, or in an indoor kennel, but don't lock your dog into one room, - he needs to feel free to move around and not feel trapped. It also helps to turn on the TV ( I quite like wildlife documentaries) or radio in the room he feels safe in.

I'm ready for my schedule to be interrupted on New Years Day, and for Nikki and Richard to be a bit less keen to take me out for a walk until later in the morning. I'm also expecting them to look a bit 'ruff'.

New Agility Courses in the South - Open Day 8th of January

The directions to the agility course - Come off the TF1 at exit 29 then take 3rd exit at the roundabout (straight ahead for Aqualand). After about 60 metres turn right on to Avenida Europa. This road has a few curves but always uphill. Soon you will see a wall on the right, the top half white with large yellow rectangles. Take next right after this wall. This will bring you to the top road where on the other side you can see all the banana plantations. Continue in the same direction, at the end of this road are concrete barriers but there you will see a small road on the left leading down to the farm.

I think I will check it out, sounds fun..!

Accion-del-sol and Tenerife's Association for disabled people

Accion Del Sol was very honoured last week to welcome visitors from Amisur in San Miguel. Amisur is one of the south of Tenerifes Associations for disabled people. A group of adults and there carers paid there first visit to the refuge and it was a huge success. There response to the dogs and puppies was amazing, it was great to see so many happy smiling faces. The dogs and puppies were extremely well behaved. We look forward to welcoming more people from Amisur next year, we firmly believe that animals really do help people with disabilities.

Our Educational Roadshow ended with having spoken to almost 3000 school children in Arico, Granadilla and Arona, many of the children have since been to the refuge with there parents and we have even found a few new homes for some of the many dogs at the refuge. We plan next year to visit more schools here in the south of Tenerife with our Educational Roadshow. We really work hard and we are very committed to educate children as well as castrating / sterilising every dog that comes into the refuge to make a difference to animal welfare here in Tenerife.

In January after all the festivities are over we plan to start a " Puppy and Pony club " once a month at the refuge. This will be held on a Saturday morning, the first one being the 28th of January 10.30 - 13.00 and will be open to children aged 5 upwards. We plan to have a fun but educational morning teaching the children basic animal care and the chance for them to play with the puppies and small dogs as well as pony rides . The cost for the club is 5e which will all go to Accion Del Sol towards there many escalating costs for the dogs in there care. Please call 687905511 for more information and toreserve your child's place. Parents are welcome to join in or maybe you would to walk one of the many refuge dogs whilst your child is participating at the club.

We have so many gorgeous dogs at the refuge all looking for new homes, we work very hard to try and adopt as many dogs as possible here in Tenerife or in Germany, last week 12 lucky dogs have been adopted with another 6 dogs safely flown to Germany to start there new lives, but almost every day more and more dogs are being brought into the refuge from the streets of Granadilla, Guia De isora and Arona.

We would like to thank every single person over the last year that in one way or another has helped Accion Del Sol with there plight here in Tenerife to help stray and abandoned dogs and to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Accion Del Sol will be open there normal hours Monday - Friday 3-6pm over the festive season. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER the Parque Eolica where the windmills are. Gizmo's 12 Christmas Rules for Dogs

My Twelve Rules of Christmas for Dogs:

1. Best not to pee on the tree that the humans bring into the house. It's a very strange thing to do I know: bringing a tree into the house ! I mean, what's that all about ? but apparently it's an important ritual for the humans.

2. Don't chew the cord that's plugged into the wall and runs around the tree. It's not much fun having a few hundred volts of electricity shooting through your tail - really plays havoc with your fur-cut !

3. Don't tear open any of the nicely wrapped boxes that they put around the tree, even if it has your name on it and what's inside smells really tasty.

4. Don't get annoyed when your owner puts a stoopid paper hat on your head. Apparently humans get a big kick out of this. Dog-God knows why. Be nice - its only for one day a year after all (any more than that and you should seek help for them).

5. Be nice to any strangers that visit over the Christmas holidays. Best not to smother them with wet sloppery kisses, because apparently some humans don't like this (allegedly).

6. Don't get annoyed when a visitor sits on your favourite bit of the sofa. Just fart loudly and smelly - that should get rid of them pretty quickly !

7. Don't grab food from the table (even if it smells a lot better than the stuff that they normally feed you).

8. Important rule: chocolate is very bad for dogs. Don't be tempted to have a chew from an open box lying on the floor, it could make you extremely sick or worse - very fat ... then that cute poodle next door won't fancy you any more.

9. Don't drink out of glasses that are left hanging around, unless you want to have a major mucho headache (humans call this a 'hangover'). It's not pleasant, and can lead to a lot of mess on the tiles.

10. Be very patient with your female human around his time of year - it can be a very stressful time for her: wrapping up all those presents, cooking all that food etc. So it won't help her mood if you break any of the other rules (eating the turkey, destroying the presents, peeing on the tree, getting a hangover and being sick on the carpet etc).

11. Be nice to the children: only eat one at a time ! (only joking of course :-)

12. Don't bite the Big Guy who appears in the living room in the middle of the night. You can't miss him: he has a white beard, and is dressed in red. I know what you mutts are thinking: "this is really stoopid ... if some stranger comes down the chimney any other time of year, my owner would want me to bark like crazy, and scare the sh*t out of the intruder". But this is another of their weird seasonal rituals. Where do they get these crazy ideas from ? I mean, can you imagine some big fat pooch with a beard coming down the chimney to bring you a load of dog biscuits ? On second thoughts - bring it on !

Tis the night before Christmas and all through the town,
every shelter is full - we are lost, but not found,
Our numbers are hung on our kennels so bare,
we hope every minute that someone will care,
They'll come to adopt us and give us the call,
"Come here, Max and Sparkie - come fetch your new ball!!
But now we sit here and think of the days
we were treated so fondly - we had cute baby ways,

Once we were little, then we grew and we grew
now we're no longer young and we're no longer new.
So out the back door we were thrown like the trash,
they reacted so quickly - why were they so rash?
We "jump on the children:, "didn't come when they called",
we "bark when they leave us", climb over the wall.
We should have been neutered, we should have been spayed,
now we suffer the consequence of the errors THEY made.

If only they'd trained us, if only we knew...
we'd have done what they asked us and worshiped them too.
We were left in the backyard, or worse -let to roam-
now we're tired and lonely and out of a home.
They dropped us off here and they kissed us good-bye...
"Maybe someone else will give you a try."
So now here we are, all confused and alone...
in a shelter with others who long for a home.

The kind workers come through with a meal and a pat,
with so many to care for, they can't stay to chat,
They move to the next kennel, giving each of us cheer...
we know that they wonder how long we'll be here.
We lay down to sleep and sweet dreams fill our heads...
of a home filled with love and our own cozy beds.
Then we wake to see sad eyes, brimming with tears -
our friends filled with emptiness, worry, and fear.

The vets believe that he is a year old, he is very affectionate and sociable with other dogs .

Ariety, O"Hara and Suzi are three beautiful puppies all looking for new loving homes , they were brought into the refuge a few weeks ago and now they are a picture of health and ready to find new homes.

       Panchito the Farabella pony, Mr Jack , one of Marions own dogs who likes to think hes the refuge supervisor and bossess everyone around and an armful of puppies are all making preperations for the start of the Accion Del Sol Educational Roadshow which begins the last week in November, they will be visiting various schools in Arona, Arico and Granadilla spreading the good word on animal welfare. Education is so important at an early age with the children. In January after all the Christmas festivities are over we are planning to start a "Puppies and Ponies " club once a month at the refuge Accion Del Sol. This is designed to be a fun but educational for children of all ages, it will include teaching the children basic animal care, and lots of activities like playing with the puppies, pony riding, learning agility on our purpose built course , and much more, look out for more information to follow.


We have lots of gorgeous dogs that would love a walk if you have alittle bit of spare time on your hands and you'd like to make a dog ortwo very happy as well as getting fit. We are also looking for people toescort dogs to Germany , you will be met at the airport with all therelevant paperwork and Aktion Tiers representatives will meet you inGermany. If you are travelling to Germany and would like to help give adog a new start in life then please do call the refuge on the numberbelow.
     Michele and Paul Curtis have adopted this beautiful podenco and named her Perdy, she is settling in well in her new home along with there other dog Mollie who we rescued 3 years ago from k9 she is a cross yorkie - Schnauzer who is looking after Perdita(perdy)very well. Podencos do make loving pets.

   Please remember if you really want to help the dogs plighthere in Tenerife then please STERILISE; CASTRATE AND ADOPT A PET from arefuge , together we can make a difference. Please also remember to call 112 if you find a stray or abandoned dog on the streets.

Live Arico´s policy is to ask for a minimum donation of €70 for an adopted dog, which is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, who will as a result be chipped, vaccinated with anti rabies and V7 vaccine and issued with a passport. From this amount a small proportion is used to reduce our debt with Hospivet. If your pet already has been vaccinated, or chipped, we still charge €70 and obviously then a larger amount is paid off our account. This is in line with other refuges who charge an adoption fee. Hospivet also offer flea & worm treatments from €11 for a months cover of Advocate, and will discuss neutering & spaying options with you. We highly recommend this surgery who work tirelessly for Live Arico at hugely discounted rates, and cannot praise their dedication to our animals enough.

A Man's Best Friend ..

I was sent this by email from a friend I thought it was a good tale,:)

A man and his dog were walking along aroad. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been deadfor years.

He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stonewall. It looked like fine marble..it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in thesunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.

He and the dog walked toward the gate and as he gotcloser, he saw a man at a desk.

When he was close enough, he called out,'Excuse me, where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water broughtright up.'

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.'Can myfriend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the travellerasked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another longhill, he came to a dirt road leading through afarm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Doyou have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to thedog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump,' said the man.

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was anold-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward theman.

'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said.
'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That'shell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'
'No we're just happy that they screen out the folks whowould leave their best friends behind.

The Tenerife Forum nominated Charity

The Tenerife Forum are very supportive of mine and other people's various rescue doggie threads. I would like in turn to mention 'The Tenerife Forum nominated Charity'. Forum members are invited to donate food etc, for the Bethlemistas Nuns in Vilaflor who distribute the food donation to poor people.

The Tenerife forum collect these food donations on a regular basis all year round. The next collection the forum will be asking people if they could also pop in a Christmas treat or toy for a child as well as donations of food staples, ie pasta, rice, tins etc.

Olwyn Venables a forum member has made some fabulous cards for Christmas which you can purchase and the money goes towards food donations.

A trip to the vet, 'what a pain in the ass'...

I have been having problems today with going to the toilet , nothing was coming out !. So Nikki checked the back end this afternoon and saw something sticking out that she reckoned wasn't suppose too be there. So off to Animal Sur we went.

Nikki explained to the Vet that I had problems doing my number two's. The vet then looked into my mouth and eyes . Nikki then said " no, no it's the back end of the dog that is the problem" . I think the Vet was trying to put off the inevitable off looking at my rear end, and really I can't blame him.

Anyhow , indeed their was something stuck, quite a few things actually , bit of twig, string,wool etc. The vet managed to clear the blockage, what a nice man..!

So the moral of the story doggies, don't eat stuff you are not suppose too otherwise it will involve a rather embarrassing and uncomfortable visit to the vet .

The Gillian Banks Theatre School, from Rotherham in the Uk. They came, with all their sectacular costumes, and worked so hard for us, and what talent they have. The two main shows were at the Palms Bar And Restaurant. Golf del Sur, where €700 was raised, and The Harbour Club Los Gigantes which was nothing short of amazing, with €2500 raised. A scaled down show was staged at the Theatre Bar where we took another €136 on the raffle. So, all in all €3336 raised for the dogs in less than a week. Why cant every week be the same? Heartfelt thanks to Gillian, Martin, all their talented students and the owners and staff of the venues where they performed. Next year? Can we? .......

All involved in the benefit at the Java Bar last Sunday the 30th, where we raised €211. Entertainment was provided by Phil Gibson and JJ & Cassie, Saphryn Townsend, Martin Yorke, Steve Delsey, Megan Coyle, Dougie Brown & Sam Saxo, and Emma Jones. Thanks too to our hard working volunteers Trisha Darling and Ana Perez for selling the tickets. Good job to all.

UPCOMING EVENTS.

The Gillian Banks Theatre School from the UK are here in Tenerife this week with one aim – to raise money for our dogs. The well known and immensely talented vocalist Nick Page is the
school´s Patron, and because of this connection the dogs are going to have a bumper month. No less than 14 professional and semi-professional students have been sponsored to come and perform for us at the highest level, and we are grateful beyond words. At the time of writing the sold out events are in progress BUT a third show at the Theatre Bar, San Eugenio this Friday the 28th will be on a first come first served basis, so be early and you will get a seat. See you there. I will be provinding details of the events and the funds raised at them next week.

This Sunday the 30th October, from 4pm, we will be at the Java Bar, Funchal, Los Cristianos, for the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DOGS!!! There will be a halloween theme so come in costume, and lots of entertainment, with Heathers Fattitude Show and Dougie Browns Buble show already confirmed. From this amount a small proportion is used to reduce our debt with Hospivet. If your pet already has been vaccinated, or chipped, we still charge €70 and obviously then a larger amount is paid off our account. This is in line with other refuges who charge an adoption fee. Hospivet also offer flea & worm treatments from €11 for a months cover of Advocate, and will discuss neutering & spaying options with you. We highly recommend this surgery who work tirelessly for Live Arico at hugely discounted rates, and cannot praise their dedication to our animals enough.

Chica Needs a Home

This little pooch ( Chica) was found in the El Medano area and is being kindly looked after by Claire. Claire though cannot keep Chica permanently and would like to find a home for this doggie.

Chica is a small foxy like dog approx 7 to 8 months . Very sweet, does not bark, fun to play with, loves to walk, good at home (garden/terrace). She sleeps outside. Chica is able to stay with Claire until a home is found.

This lovely little dog is Petra who is a very good companion and best friend to Lana Bellamy who came to visit Accion Del Sol recently, Lana was amazed by the first class refuge and she had a great time playing with the puppies and viewing the kennels. Lana very kindly made a very generous gift to Accion Del Sol which was very greatly received , many thanks to you Lana.

The first two weeks in December are going to be a very busy time for Accion el Sol as Jack and Panchito who is a Farabella pony along with Gizmo, Nikki Attree and a few puppies from the refuge will begin the" Accion Del Sol Educational Roadshow ". Educating the children at an early age we believe will help children to understand animals and learn to respect them aswell as learning basic care , feeding, there needs and to explain to them the difference between two animals. Nikki Attree wrote and designed an excellent training aid in words and pictures which will play a vital role in the educational roadshow see here. This has been translated into German and Spanish as well as English and it has also been put on Aktion Tiers Website http://www.aktiontier.org/index.php?m=25&id=815 and it is being used at the Aktion Tier Juniors club and it is proving to be a huge success. Nikki has a brought a little humour into a very serious issue of abandoned dogs and there rescue plight which allows the children to learn in a good and interesting way. Accion Del Sols vet will also attend to explain basic veterainary care and feeding as well as explaining the difference in herbivores and carnivores . Accion Del Sol is very committed to there educational programme to try to help the children of the future learn to love and care for there pets hopefully making this a better place for our four legged friends and to make headway in reducing the amount of abandoned dogs here in Tenerife.

The Director of Accion Del Sol Marion Köpke De Gonzälez is always happy to show people around the refuge and answer any questions you may have. The refuge is situated at Poligono De Industrial Estate, Granadilla, Exit 51 on the TF1, directly next to ITER the Parque Eolica where the windmills are. The refuge is open monday - friday 3-6pm so do pop down for a visit. The refuge has seen a large increase in dogs over the last few months so if you are looking for a dog to adopt then please do pay the refuge a visit or call Accion Del Sol on 922778630. Every dog is micro chipped, pass ported, fully updated with inoculations, sterilised / castrated and ready for new loving homes. Please do come and visit Accion Del Sol and see the amazing good work that they do there. The best care and medical treatment is provided for every dog brought into the refuge. The kennels are spotlessly clean and no flea or fly dare enter the premises !! The dogs are kept in small groups between 2 and up to 6 except for the dogs classed as dangerous dogs which have a kennel each to avoid any arguments. The dogs all arrive terrified and mostly untouchable but within a very short time they soon learn to trust humans again. Accion Del Sol do have some very nice families that do come and walk the dogs in the afternoons, if you would like to volunteer as a dog walker and you have a bit of spare time then please do call the refuge or pop in for a chat . The dogs love to go out and its a good way to get a little bit of extra exercise.

Justin, Femke, and all at MustCat for their generous donation of the catamaran and crew for a three hour trip last Sunday. We had a fantastic time on the journey from Las Galletas, seeing lots of pilot whales, dolphins by the Los Cristianos fish farms (looking for their tea, ha ha) enjoying food and drink, and finally a lovely swim off Palm Mar. The best part was we made €700 for the dogs, and again, we are so grateful for the generosity shown to us. Just one question. Can we do it again?
UPCOMING EVENTS.

The Gillian Banks Theatre School from the UK are here from this Sunday the 23rd with one aim – to raise money for our dogs. The well known and immensely talented vocalist Nick Page is the
school´s Patron, and because of this connection the dogs are going to have a bumper month. No less than 14 professional and semi-professional students have been sponsored to come and perform for us at the highest level, and we are grateful beyond words. The first two events, at the Palms Golf del Sur (24th) and the Harbour Club Los Gigantes (27th) are completely sold out, BUT a third show at the Theatre Bar, San Eugenio on the 28th will be on a first come first served basis, so be early and you will get a seat. See you there.

' Handbag Dogs'

( Me trying to get into a handbag fortunately for me only my front paws will fit, thank goodness !)

This definately makes me barking mad , 'Handbag dogs' or 'Purse dogs'. I mean what is all that about !. Stuffing a poor defenceless pooch into a bag. A dog is a dog irrelevant of whether the doggie is small in size or not. Very small dogs like Chihuahuas which are popular hand bag dogs, need walks and be socialised with other dogs just as much as large hounds , otherwise they get bored then can turn nasty. Not surprising really I would turn nasty if I was expected to sit still in a hand bag all day, fortunately for me though I can't fit into a handbag ( as illustrated in photo ).

So anybody out there if you are thinking of getting a Chihuahua or any very small doggie please don't keep him in a hand bag its down right cruel. Every dog deserves to be treated like a dog not a fashion accessory.!

ADIOS TO OUR RICK WARREN:-
We say goodbye to a true friend of Live Arico this week, the lovely Rick Warren. Many old timers will remember him as Rick the Ticket, he was the man for booking flights some 15 years ago back in the day when hardly any one had the internet. Him and partner Suzanna were instrumental in setting up our first shop in Costa del Silencio, and he continued on giving a donation from flight sales as well as tirelessly picking up shop donations.  Even when diagnosed with cancer some 2 years ago, he carried on working for us until the dreaded illness got the better of him. He lost his brave fight this week but we at Live Arico did get the chance to say goodbye and thank you a couple of weeks ago. Rick leaves €5000 to Live Arico which will go to reducing our debt with Hospivet Sur and La Granja, our food suppliers. We also hope to buy a pressure washer to make the cleaning tasks easier, and also some new collection boxes. Rick would have liked that. Sleep well old friend, in the knowledge you have made a difference.

Number of dogs being abandoned has soared

According to an article in The Telegragh the number of dogs being abandoned has risen to its highest level in more than a decade in the UK. Though there are no statistics in Tenerife , the refuges are having many more dogs being brought in over the last few years and its becoming increasingly difficult too find space for these strays in the shelters.

So if you are thinking of adopting a dog there are plenty of doggies in the shelters who would love to become part of your family.

All involved in our fundraiser at the Ocean View Restaurant, Comodoro Hotel, Los Cristianos, where we raised a fantastic €630 last Friday the 30th September. Roger, Heather and their staff worked so hard on a hot and busy night, and we had Hi De Hi star Paul Shane helping Suzy q with the compering. Fine entertainment was provided by Dorian, Andy Phillips, Kracka as the Blues Brothers, Robbie Dominic, Alfie B, Michaela, Tanya Tevaro and Phil Gibson. Many thanks to all. Good job!!!

The lovely people at Mustcat have donated to us their catamaran for a three hour trip to see the whales and dolphins on the morning of Sunday the 16th October. We set sail from Las Galletas harbour at 10 am, and drinks (bubbly if you wish) are included. The normal price of this excursion is €41, but we are selling tickets at a one off price of €25!!! Directions to Accion-del-Sol are as follows......on the TF1 going north from the airport towards Santa Cruz take the turning off for the Granadilla Industrial Port, exit A. Head towards the sea and windmills go straight across one roundabout when you reach the next roundabout veer right up towards the Ecological centre. You will stop and see a hut ( you can't go any further as their will be barrier and somebody outside the hut) Accion-del-sol is up a track on your right about a 100 metres...

Nikki designed some posters for children which will be displayed at Accion-del-sol with me as the star, it explains my true story of how I was picked up by the dog catchers and taken to Accion-del-sol and how they looked after me at the refuge and my adoption by Nikki and Richard . The posters also gives tips on how to be a responsible dog owner .

The story has been translated into three languages English, Spanish and German . The German version appears on the main Aktiontier website.

The cost of owning a dog or cat

The cost of owning a dog or Cat is approx £17.000 or 19,450 euros over the animals lifetime.

I certainly do not want to put anyone off from adopting a dog or cat , but its important to take into account the financial commitment as well as the time you give to your pet so he is happy. Its not much point in adopting a dog or cat from a shelter or buying a pet from a breeder and realising a few months down the line that you can't afford your furry friend and possibly abandoning him or her.

HALF YEAR FIGURES:-

Are as follows:-

Our three charity shops made a net profit of €22,080.39 from January to June inclusive. We thank Claudia, Trish and Siobhan for managing the shops, and all their hardworking volunteers. You are all stars. All the coins in our collection boxes totalled a further €4137.21. They do add up. Suzy´s benefits brought in €5445, and we thank all the acts who constantly give us their time. We are lucky to be able to call upon the very best of talent when we need to, and, as was proved at Restaurant Maria, we sure can put on the best of events. Donations made were €4982, which gave us a total income of €36,644.60 In reality, our running costs are around €10,000 per month, and once again the shortfall has been met by our vets, Hospivet Sur in Las Chafiras and our feed supplier. We constantly strive to reduce our debts with both entities, and our membership scheme has had a good start – we hope it will continue to give us this extra, most needed income. Next week we will publish figures regarding numbers of dogs in and out.

All involved in our fundraiser at Restaurant Maria, Golf del Sur on Friday the 9th September, where we raised an outstanding €1000. Solange and her lovely staff worked amazingly hard to feed almost 100 people and keep the drinks flowing. The entertainment was first class, and Suzy q introduced an array of talent in the form of Sebastian, Phil Gibson, up and coming Alfie B, Tanya Tevaro, Nick Page, and Charlie Karlsen, making his final appearance before starting his studies at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London. We wish him well, he started his singing career at our benefits 4 years ago.
All in all, one of the best nights ever, with a fantastic atmosphere in this stunning venue. We will make this a regular occurrence, so check this column for news.

Following some confusion we are clarifying the situation. Live Arico´s policy is to ask for a minimum donation of €70 for an adopted dog, which is paid direct to Hospivet Sur on collection of your new pet, who will as a result be chipped, vaccinated with anti rabies and V7 vaccine and issued with a passport. From this amount a small proportion is used to reduce our debt with Hospivet. If your pet already has been vaccinated, or chipped, we still charge €70 and obviously then a larger amount is paid off our account. This is in line with other refuges who charge an adoption fee. Hospivet also offer flea & worm treatments from €11 for a months cover of Advocate, and will discuss neutering & spaying options with you. We highly recommend this surgery who work tirelessly for Live Arico at hugely discounted rates, and cannot praise their dedication to our animals enough.

HOMEMADE DOG TREATS, AND FABULOUS GREETINGS CARDS NOW IN OUR SHOPS .

For home made treats from Kimbos Pupcakes, treat your pooch to lovely snacks made with natural ingredients. Including carrot cupcakes topped with doggy chocolate!! I had my first stay at Poochie Pet Hotel recently , it was great fun made some doggie friends and it was full on play mode !. What is great about Poochies is that the dogs are not kept in the kennels all day, but can run around the large enclosed area..

Seatbelt Law for dogs in the UK

I think this is a woofing good idea, hopefully it will happen some campaigners are trying to get a law passed in the UK to make legislation whereby it is the responsibilty of the car driver to securely fasten his dog in the car when driving, with a harness and seatbelt.

It makes sense, doggies are also made of flesh and blood and during a car accident can be catapulted into the windscreen.

This coming October The Gillian Banks Theatre School, from Rotherham in the UK, will be bringing 15 of it´s professional and semi-professional performers to the Island for one week, to perform in no less than 3 charity shows to benefit the Live Arico Animal Rescue Centre.

The Theatre School supports many charities throughout the year both locally and across the world (Nepal being one place), and in May this year an exchange of talent occurred when Nick Page flew to the UK to perform on a charity bill with the Theatre School, which is a registered charity with Nick as it´s Patron. An amazing 11,000 pounds was raised for local charities. Now, in exchange for Nick´s chosen charity, Live Arico, the Theatre School is returning the gesture and performing three times in the final week of October to raise money for the cash strapped dog refuge.

Singing & dancing showgirls will all perform together on the three nights, and promise to bring new talents to the Island´s entertainment scene. Tickets will be limited so don´t hestitate to reserve yours now through Suzy Q on 682 517045 to be part of this unique event.

Performances will happen as follows:-

Monday 24th October. The Palms, Golf del Sur. Tickets €10 to include dinner.
Thursday 27th October. The Harbour Club, Los Gigantes. Tickets €15 to include five star buffet dinner.
Friday 28th October. The Theatre Bar, San Eugenio. €5 of raffle tickets to be purchased on entry.

ACCION del Sol’s main goal since opening their refuge at Granadilla five years ago has been to reduce the number of dogs abandoned on the streets over here.

That is why they have accepted the official rules and regulations and have reached agreements with Tenerife Cabildo (Government) and its various municipalities in the South of Tenerife.

The centre’s aim is to press forward towards responsible management concerning the issue of animal protection by both parties.

Collection procedure:

The local police notify the collector and arrange the collection of the abandoned dog.
The Civil Protection, or the probation officer, picks up the animal and transports it in a specially-adapted to the shelter.
On arrival, the dog is issued with a serial number for registration and documented. Three copies are made and all are signed and sealed by the manager/centre veterinarian.
The official document states the meeting site, date, time, race, sex and colour of the dog. The dog collector will also take a picture of the animal for the document and checks with a microchip reader to see whether it has been chipped
If the animal has a microchip, the owner will be notified immediately. He/she then has 21 days to remove the animal from the centre, after passing through the local police or Town Hall and showing the relevant documents.
If, after 21 days, the dog is not claimed, the dog will be in the custody of the shelter.
If the owner had not registered a “lost pet” complaint at the local police, he/she faces a substantial fine.
Who holds the registered document? One copy stays in the shelter, the local police have another, while the third goes to the relevant Town Hall.

Although the Accion del Sol shelter can house up to 150 animals and is regarded as one of the largest refuges in Tenerife, there is insufficient space for all the stray dogs.

That means there are strict controls in place, which are necessary to prevent overcrowding and enable staff to maintain the relevant standards of animal protection and welfare.

For that reason Marion Gonzalez, who runs Accion de Sol and is a director of Aktiontier – the German charity which sponsors the refuge – stresses that it is not a place where people can simply offload their pets.

“If a person decides to have an animal, then he/she must maintain responsibility for the pet’s lifetime. The refuge is not obligated to accept pets which are no longer cherished by their owners,” said Marion.

“Although this sometimes causes arguments with people who want to abandon dogs at the shelter, there can be no exceptions to this rule.

“The refuge takes in only those animals which have been abandoned in those municipalities where there is an agreement with the Town Council.”

Marion adds: “We have never said we can solve the global problem on this Island. We simply want to be an example of how you could take the issue of animal protection from the authorities and other protectors.

“As some municipalities receive Government payments, it is our duty to comply with the agreements. Naturally, this also includes crimes of mistreatment.

“We all need to work together without repercussions, and to ensure that people who abandon their pets are punished.

“If we fail to do this, then the problem of abandoned and non-neutered dogs will continue.”

Mark, Alice and Gizmo

We went to visit the new owners of Poochie's Pet Hotel this morning. Alice and Mark greeted us at the gate giving me a friendly pat on the head. They were very careful to put away the bigger doggies before they opened the gates, which was very good, I appreciated that :)

Nikki and Richard had a coffee and chat and I had a play with a mad Yorkshire terrier mix. Alice and Mark have been working with the previous owners of Poochies (Pete and Kate) through the summer, so know what running a Doggy Hotel is going to entail, and they have plenty of enthusiasm and of course it goes without saying Alice and Mark love dogs.

I wish Alice and Mark every success with running Poochies and look forward to staying there soon :).

Good bye Pete and Kate you will be sadly missed by many people and dogs on Tenerife. All the very best of luck with your new life :)

Auto was around 4 months old when he came to K9, back in July 2008. He was found by the TF1 junction at Las Chafiras with a collar and lead attached. You would think he was actually a lost dog but no-one came looking for him. So he has grown up in the kennels, whatever happened to him in that first 4 months has stuck, as he is very shy with new people, especially with men. He also has a problem with new dogs and will be the first to attack. Over his time at K9 he has been paired up with various kennel mates and seen them go to new homes.

He is currently with Roberta, his kennel mate for more than a year now (also looking for a home). He loves to go walking and is very good off the lead, Roberta loves to run about but Auto only runs and plays for a little bit and then stays nearby. Auto is a special dog and will need a very loving and caring home, can you help. He will need patience but with time will grow to love you and be a very good companion. It would be best for him to be in a one dog family although with time and effort will pair with a female. We are hoping that Auto’s Story will touch the heart of someone, who will be willing to give him a chance.

Mike and I had been doing some research into Doggie T-Shirts as a potential new line for our printing business so we decided to go to a pet shop in Los Cristianos to see what’s available at the moment. Whilst at the shop we spotted some puppies in cages and had a look at them, they were soooo cute. Thinking nothing of it, we could not get one of the puppies out of our minds and we started talking about the potential of having a dog again. (We had a dog many years ago but didn’t replace him after he went.

We then decided rather than to get a puppy we should adopt a dog from a Refuge and we started trailing the internet searching K9 and Tier Aktion and a few others. We spotted her photo in the Tier Aktion Facebook Adoption Section and fell in love straight away but because TA are not open on Sundays (and it was Saturday) I got in touch via Facebook stating my interest in ‘Celeste’ the name given to Mercedes by TA and that we would come on Monday during their opening hours and please not to give her to anyone else. We drove up at 3pm and asked just for her.

She was the most gorgeous sweet thing we’d ever seen and took her out for a walk around the Shelter and decided to take her home straight away. According to Marion at Tier Aktion, Mercedes had been found walking on the streets of San Miguel and she had been at the shelter for about 6 weeks and were were told she is about 2 years old..

She has brought so much life and love into our family, words cannot describe it. She comes everywhere with us and is a true companion. We are looking forward to many years of happiness with her.

Here's a suggestion that might help people to adopt a dog from one of the rescue shelters ...

Gizmo, my own rescue pooch, has a bad habit of barking at strangers he meets on a walk. We're not really sure what in his history caused this, but we're hoping that we can reverse it (any suggestions gratefully received !).*

Recently I met Dominique Doring , a dog trainer who is currently working at K9, and she's helping us try and change Gizmo's bad behaviour and overcome his anxiety. That's what prompted this post ...

I think that it would be wooftastic if the shelters here could could team up with a dog trainer, or at least be able to recommend one to people who have adopted a dog.

Of course not every rescue pooch comes with problems, but some abandoned dogs do have issues. So it would be great to have the back-up of a dog trainer if the going gets tough, and the new owner is thinking that they might have to return the dog to the shelter.

It may only take a few sessions with a qualified trainer before the rescue dog gets over his problem, or at least the new owner can see signs of improvement. Then the woofer is given longer to settle in, and doesn't immediately get 'banged up' back in the cages at the shelter.

So, I think that if the rescue shelters could work more closely with a dog trainer it would give people a back-up if problems do occur, and perhaps lead to fewer dogs being returned.

My second lesson with Dog trainer Dominique Doring

For my second lesson with Dominique we went to an area where there were some people for me to practice on. I am nervous of strangers when I meet them on the street and bark at them which isn't very sociable. Maybe its because of the time I spent on the streets when I was abandoned. Anyway Dominique said I had improved , but I still get annoyed at children on bicycles , skateboards etc.

Dominique and Nikki held me on two leads so I was waliking inbetween them, it then felt quite safe . I did get quite tired though and lay on the ground a few times well it was hard work..!

Dominique's training is one on one so you get the benefit of Dominique really getting to know your Dog and his/her problem.

A very bonito Podenco was run over recently and was operated on by the kind vets at Centro Veterinario El Madroñal, but the dog now needs a owner .

The vets believe that he is a year old, he is very affectionate and sociable with other dogs .
